wraparound/wrapover bridges
« on: June 13, 2013, 08:58:16 PM »
Just Installed a Duesenberg wraparound bridge on my '06 Gibson SG
Its the 74mm stud spacing so all you have to do is drill out the TOM bridge stud holes, so that the Duesenberg studs fit.

I've heard people slating the idea of going from TOM setups to wraparound jobs, the usual response being "why would you?". However, I can report a way awesomer tone/sustain. Not to mention it looks boss.

Whats the consensus on this kind of mod?I know Iommi and Young have both done this mod to their SGs in the 70s, perhaps when there weren't better options. But in my opinion there's still an argument for it.

I have to say I tried a couple of guitars with TOM and Wraparound bridges, and the ones with wraparound sounded so much better.

The Fredrik Akesson PRS I tried had a wraparound and it's one of the nicest sounding guitars I've ever played.

I love wraparound bridges, hence my collection is full of Les Paul Juniors, Les Paul Specials and PRS guitars.

I've never tried a wraparound and a tune-o-matic on the same guitar, so I don't know how significant the tonal difference really is, I just like things to be as simple and uncomplicated as possible.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

What did you do with the holes from the original tailpiece? Did you cover them somehow?
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII

I agree with the less complicated the better. I was tempted by the PRS Mira when it came out, nice simple guitar. I'd miss the binding tho. I played a walnut '69 SG special. That was a pleasant experience. I'd always be worried about breaking it, so I passed.

I'm not surprised the tone has improved with this mod. The inserts the regular Gibson bridge mounts on are pretty weedy. The Duesenberg inserts go nearly through the body, so very good for resonance.

RE: Blanking the holes....The bridge comes with short black screws that fit the tailpiece stud threads. They have a wide head, allen key type. Kind of a blanking solution I guess. If you like black. It also came with some chrome/nickel blanking screws but they're a different wider thread.

Along with the blanking screws they give you allen keys for adjusting the bridge height and intonation.

Pretty pleased with it, worked out to about £60 so not cheap. But considerably cheaper than some of the full width aftermarket wraparounds out there.

Never tried it on the same guitar. A luthier I know well says the tone of the wraparound is not necessarily better but different - more direct as opposed to the TOM.
