NPD - Warpig
« on: June 14, 2013, 08:57:52 PM »
So fancied a change from the Aftermath in my Schecter. I like it but i dont think it is 100% me; i also reckon it works wonders for lower tunings or possibly guitars that are darker. In this guitar it always felt a bit thin and sharp.
Anyhow, while on Ebay i saw that there was a Warpig (alnico) going for sale. I have always liked the idea of the Warpig but have always been put off by some reviews saying it has too much bass, doesnt cut, etc, etc. Anyhow, I hijacked the sale and got it at a fantastic price. 8)

It took no time to arrive and I had it installed the following day. First time I plugged in....BOOM, muscular, thick, chunky, juicy, mean and just so much more the kind of thing I like, I was BLOWN AWAY. It has higher output than any other BKP i have owned but still retains that trademark clarity, needless to say I LOVE IT. I know its the honeymoon period, and i havent tried it through my proper rig or in a band context. So I will update as I try it out in these scenarios, but as it is, its so much fun to play and it packs such a punch that I have been grinning non stop just thinking about it lol

Well it certainly looks badass. If it sounds half as good I can see why you love it.

Really looking forward to hearing more about it, keep us updated by all means. Have been eying that beast myself for quite a while now. To be fair the Pig90 even more so, but I really need to get a better idea of both.

God I want a strat or tele with Pig90s and some semihollow with Warpigs. I think that should work...

Some awesome ideas there man!

I have never played a SD Invader but I notice from the tone charts anyways that its quite close to the A-Pig, and i love the fact that it has a healthy output, really punches. And matches really well with the PK neck :-)

great pup for sure

but I wouldn't say it is higher output than a PK or AM, although it sounds fuller and more juicy
very growly and organic pickup
maybe you're getting more heat from using such high poles
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Cheers Eric

It feels hotter than the Aftermath it replaced and hotter than PKs I have played but as you say it could be because its so much fuller than those pups. Yes I just assumed all Warpig pole pieces were like that, it arrived like that and just chucked it in as it was-are they normally flush with the pickup?

I think they would be at least a bit lower normally.
We just have a pole piece height discussion in another thread and the general thing is:
higher PU = more compression, hotness, fatness
lower PU = lower output and compression, more treble, clearer, more woodyness
raise the pole pieces = brighter, tighter, clearer, more focused

So I can really see why the previous owner would have raised the pole pieces. The low PU, raised pole piece combo seems like a really good idea with this thing.

Just mind play. I need a bright axe for the PIg90 after all and for the WP too, but the WP neck is also capable great jazz sounds so a hollowbody seems like a good idea.

Sounds huge, warm and organic.  :D I imagine it's a very different experience to the Aftermath.

The very dry tightness of the Aftermath just doesn't appeal to me. I like my Miracle Man for a lot of the same reasons you seem to like the Warpig.

Sounds good.  When I had my warpig in the output was surprising the first time.  I did find it too much bass but it was in a 7 string.  I found anything lower than D and the bass would be too strong for my ears.  If I kept away from the low B string it was great but I didn't that guitar to not use it's full range.  I do have new strat coming though so maybe....   :?

Yeah i dont have a huge experience with lots of lower tunings, but I personally would be wary about going lower than C tuning with the Warpig-and i can see what you mean about it being too bassy on a seven string ( i have heard of other people having the same issue). A lot is about matching it to the right guitar though-and Id love to hear it in your strat!!
