P90 for a Tom Anderson Hollow T Drop Top ??
« on: June 16, 2013, 12:08:31 PM »
And now for something entirely different.
[Everyone think they got the most important questions don’t they ;-)]

I just bought a Tom Anderson Hollow T Drop Top
It’s a Flame Maple Top on Swamp Ash body and a Hard Rock Maple neck with an African Rosewood Fretboard.
The formal owner for some reason flipped the original T.A P90th,  for 3 X Dimarzio virtual P90 instead. And that the way I got her.
I was thinking maybe experiment with some BN P90th.. But could not choose from the varieties listed on site.   I'm looking for a decent growl!, fat cleans and enough hotness to cop with a decent amount of drive!
I have 3 pups to put on her….  what will you put in it if you were me?

you certainly want nantuckets for that guitar  8) the classic p90 sound is already fat and crunchy.

for variety, you could think about a miniHB in one of the positions.

That is a pretty little axe, sexy thing.

Nantuckets certainly sound like a good idea. One up from that would be Supermassive as an alternative.
Probably Nantuckets, but more info on style and such would be useful.

You can always throw something a bit lighter in the middle, like a blue note.

Thanks guys.
You're are always so helpful!
Regarding for styles… I figure something a lone of blues hard rock\fusion kind of feel
I need some massive growl on an overdriven amp… and some chime bell like fat cleans.
The Ash\Maple combination get some bassy feel to it… I guess I need something to even the rest of the frequency out… a bump on the mid and highs will be great,

Nantuckets for sure, maybe combined with a Blue Note in the middle.

That's a pretty guitar btw!

I have a 90s Hamer with a Nantucket in the bridge and Bluenote in the neck. I think they complement each other extremely well. Maybe in your case I'd go for Nantuckets in the bridge and middle spot then put a Bluenote at the neck.

That's an option too. I thought Bluenote in the middle for some extra chime when combining the outer pickups with the middle, but I don't know how the Anderson is wired.

Btw, I like those Hamers very much, must be a great guitar, especially with the BKP's you got in it.  :)

My thought too, more in the way of a HSH combo.
As you said though, both will be great.

A lot of wiring fun can be had here. Quite some combinations, plus series / parallel and out of phase are on the table =)

The reason I suggested it as an alternate option is that I really like the Bluenote neck A LOT and if it were me, I'd rather have a growlier mid than change that neck tone. I do love my Hamer, the BKPs have really completed it. Basic but spot on.

hi,
thanks guys for your suggestions,
i was playing last night and figure that the virtual p90 are good, but don't live in the same potential this guitar has for all i can puled.
i also found them a bit weak for my taste, i totally want some HOTTER pups!!

If you want really hot pickups you certainly don't want Bluenotes and even the Nantuckets may not be enough. There's plenty of growl in the Nantuckets but they are very vintage voiced. I'm afraid I know nothing of the hotter P90s so I can't help you there.

An option could be: bridge Supermassive, middle Bluenote and neck Nantucket. The Supermassive will provide extra push, different voiced then the Nantucket though: more bass, less highs. With the Bluenote in the middle you keep the option for chimey in-between-sounds, when combined with the neck or the bridge.

On count of the Supermassive (I own the neck, paired with a stockholm bridge) I can say that is really does have more bass and less hights, but since it is a P90 it does not really feel dark. It does however have a modern voicing, so in that regard it really is different from the Nantucket and Blue Note, which are classic in voicing (does not mean that they can´t go heavy).
