Fender Telecaster "Black Dove" PU-Replacement
« on: June 26, 2013, 04:18:21 PM »
Hi,

I would like to change the PU's in my "Black Dove". Love the guitar, but the original Fender P90s aren't that great.
Actually I'm looking fpr P-90s with bit more bite and output and thought of the Nantucket90 (or perhaps the supermassive90).
Is the Nantucket than the Black Dove PU's? Unfortunately I can't find any specs for the Fender Black Dove PUs...

Thank you!

what people don't always realise about P90s is they all have quite high output, if they have the traditional design. The reason for this is they have two bar magnets, rather than the one that vintage humbuckers have. They also have quite a surprising amount of low-end.

For bite I would suggest Nantuckets, but if output is critical for you then the Supermassive.. but the Nantuckets aren't exactly short of output.

The Black Dove is a MIM Fender as far as I know. I like Mexico Fenders, they make them properly. I think the guitars just have two weak points - the poly finish, and also the pickups. Usually, they have good hardware, wood and other electronic parts. I think you will notice a worthwhile improvement with new pickups.

Cool guitar by the way  8)

(edit: you can sometimes argue to change the trem block on a MIM fender, but of course the Black Dove doesn't have one. Check the bridge saddles are real steel with a magnet - I think they should be, but if not you will get some more bite with a cheap upgrade of those)

+1 for Nantuckets.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Yeah, I would go for the Nantuckets too.
The Supermassive has bite too, but a lot more bottom end and generally a more modern voicing than the Nantucket.

For regular folk the NTs output should suffice and the bottom end canīt be frowned upon either.

Of course this is also a fair bit style dependant, but for upgrading a P90 to just get more of everything that makes a classic P90 great the NT is probably THE way to go.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

The Nantucket has plenty of growl, I have one in a 90s Hamer and I love it. I have a Bluenote in the neck and I love the contrast I get between the two pickups but it has less bite than the Nantucket.
