Holydiver versus JB
« on: June 29, 2013, 04:28:50 PM »
Cheers guys,

so I decided to do a pickup swap with my Holydiver. Currently it sits in my Strat (Poplar Body, Maple Neck and Fretboard) but I will be converting it from HSS to SSS for all that lovely Hendrix and Clapton sounds, with the Painkiller in my Jackson I got the metal stuff covered anyway and I never been interested in Single Coils until recently. The Middle and the Neck positions are already occupied with Slowhands so I'm gonna get the Bridge SH as well and maybe an Emerald Neck to accompany the axe the Holydiver will be going in. The guitar in question is my bassists Jackson Dinky DK2M (Alder Body, Maple Neck and Fretboard) and it will be a kind of experiment as it's not my guitar but I'm the only person playing it and taking care of it. (he devoted himself fulltime to the 4 stringed realm)

So as soon as the swap is done I'm gonna be posting the sound of the Dinky with the Holydiver, for now here's a direct comparison between the two guitars, my Strat with the HD and the Jackson with the JB. The recording is cr@ppy as I have no other means right now, so I used my VOX Metal Amplug with the exact same settings going into Audacity. As far as the sound goes it's not the best but it still shows the difference pretty well. The JB is more compressed, sort of muddy and has a fatter low end. The HD is tighter, way clearer and more responsive and all in all just a better version of the Duncan imho :P

Decide on your own and give me some feedback!

Cheers

So I just finished the swap. I have the HD now sitting in the Jackson and although the change in sound you hear in the soundclips may not be that evident, mainly due to the inability of the little headphone amp to transfer the guitars character well, there is a difference just like I expected: the guitar sounds tighter, less bloated, clearer and livelier. I'll still mess around with the sweet spot but for now I'm happy.

The Strat has a spare Duncan Invader now sitting in the bridge until I can afford the Slowhand, funnily the Invader sounds good in it since it's a rather bright axe. I bet a Warpig would sound great in it as well. Damned GAS! :P

Cheers

whoa
that was a huge improvement in clarity from the JB to the holy diver for a roughly recorded amplug clip
comparison clips recorded like that tend to sound 95% the same, but the difference is huge with yours

did I hear some sylosis riffing?  :D
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

The difference you perceive in real life is even bigger. Just amazing how much the Holydiver fits the Alder - Maple Combination of the DK2M, even for modern Metal the sound is amazing, never losing it's 80's voice. I'm gonna get an Emerald for the Neck to accompany the HD. As the guitar is now my property I'm really looking forward to this :D

Yes indeed. Revocation and Sylosis are my favourite metal bands and I'm sure that won't change anytime soon. Ever since I heard Edge of the Earth I was hooked and knowing that Josh used a Holydiver set on Monolith (and owning the Bridge HD) is just a big extra ^^

Musically not my sort of thing but I am interested in this for 1 main reason:

I'm currently in the process of replacing the Holydivers in my Eggle Prototype with something else, and the Holydivers are going over into my own Alder bodied/Maple necked Jackson DK2M to replace it's current Seymour Duncan Screamin' Demon/Jazz combo. The Duncans sound alright, but they don't hold a torch to my BKP equipped guitars so they have to go!
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......
