Awww my moneez
« on: July 08, 2013, 10:57:48 PM »
Well what does a man do on his day off when he works 6 days a week 14 hour shifts every day?
...
Damn right, he takes a guitar and goes to the local guitar store to test amps and cabs.

As pathetic as this may sound, I had a great day. I recently put a BKP Holydiver into my bassists Jackson DK2M and since I only have an Orange Micro Terror with the matching PPC 108 cab at home for practice, I felt the need to play it through a real amp to get a good impression of the difference it made to the stock JB.

First thing I need to say here is I'm sold on the EVH 5153 for over a year by now. I haven't played a better amp that suits my needs (except maybe the Marshall JVM 205 series) before so it was a pretty easy choice to decide upon which amp I would fire up.

So first I got into the smaller room of the 2 ones that are offered at the music store I visited, simply because the bigger one was occupied, spotted an Orange 2*12 with V30s and hooked it up. I must say although it sounded good, the size of the room was a big downside and I knew this wasn't what I was looking for. Anyhow, after playing for some minutes the big room was free so I re situated myself there and connected the EVH head (the 50 watt version btw) to a Mesa Cab. And let me tell you, I was blown away!

The clarity, dynamics and tightness one finds in BKPs was there of course and came as no surprise, however the sound I got out of that combination was mindblowing. Rich, fat, biting, warm yet brutal, responsive and mouth watering. I don't know how I can go on praising it, however I know the amp kicks ass already but that Mesa Cab just gave it that last piece that was missing. It was dominant, full, standing in the room like "here I am, deal with it". And that's why I choose this specific title for this thread. This thing retails at 1300 Euros and the price is certainly justified.

The Cab is loaded with Vintage 30s and that's not a surprise in any way (I want to tinker with Eminence V128s as people here have suggested them to be a good alternative to V30s) but the sound is just different to what you expect and know from ordinary cabs loaded with those speakers. It's just fuller and meatier, hard to describe, but when you hear it in person you'll know what I mean.

All I know is I need more money allthough I'm certainly spending too much already on gear and I just wanted to share my experience with you fellas. Feel free to share your opinion, tell me I'm stupid (this is my 5th beer by now, don't be too harsh :P ) and just talk gear if anything really.

Peace out and cheers!

Do you spread yourself around to different stores, or keep going back to the same one?

I guess they won't be too annoyed unless you came in and just went mental on the whammy with the dive bombs etc.

The worst thing in guitar shops is when the kid finds that same pointy guitar that all the other kids have played and sent out of tune. Even worse if they grab a 7 string and start with the br00tal breakdown stuff. They were probably happy to hear some decent playing.

Have you compared the EVH 5150 III to the Peavey 6534+?  I settled on the latter as it suits my needs, but recently I've seen some EVH amps in one particular shop. They were an ugly white colour, but I'm guessing they sound alright.

money is there to be spent not saved lol I would think a bit more before spending so much on an amp unless you are certain on what you want, maybe go to more shops, hear lots and lots of different amps first with your own guitar, they usually don't mind letting you try if they know you might buy one.

AO: I actually do like to wander round and hit different stores as most times you can find really neat and used things in the smaller ones, plus the staff is nice and takes time to help you around or just has a nice chat with you. That seems to lack in the big stores (of which we have only one here in Vienna) but you are more likely to find the "uber" gear everyone's craving for.

I don't think they are annoyed by me as I am way ahead of that phase where I would grab the first "br00tal" guitar (my taste has switched from Explorers and V Shapes as a youngling to Strats, Superstrats and Les Pauls :P), get myself hooked up to a 6505 and play metalcore. I must confess I'm guilty having done it, but as said that's over.

They even had a sign once (it's a classic done most times and taken from Wayne's World) saying "who ever plays out of tune, Stairway to Heaven, Smoke on the Water (and then a lettering someone drawed on it afterwards with a black marker) OR ANYTHING BY METALLICA owns the staff a box of beer"

I never did a direct comparison between the two amps and never tried the 6534+, only the 6505. I must say I prefer the EVH as it has a way better clean channel and the distortion seems to have more warmth. Additionally the 50 Watt head is pretty cheap, has a MIDI option, Headphone out and a preamp out. Not saying you can go wrong with Peavey but Fender have outdone themselves with the EVH series here :)

JJ: I actually didn't buy that combination and won't anytime soon as I don't have the spare cash right now and first I need to pay the rent and my guitars are going to be taken care of. I just keep this certain combo on my list of amps and cabs to watch. I usually take a lot of time, testing and consideration before buying new gear because I have dropped cash on things in the past that were either unsatisfying or unnecessary. Still a lot of stuff out there to be tested! ^^

Cheers

I'm glad you like the Holydiver in the DK2M: I'm taking my HDs out of my Patrick Eggle Climaxe and was thinking about putting them in my own DK2M  8)
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......

that sounds sensible! It's always good to play stairway twice all the way through though  you are doing all the right things, so ignore my first post. Like you say you have worked hard for it so it has to be the right one, best of luck with it all.

Brow: the HD sounds like it really was made for the Alder - Maple Combination. You will love the result I'm sure :)

JJ: Thanks! ^^
