Coil splitting question...
« on: July 09, 2013, 02:46:00 AM »
I have a question about coil splitting and please forgive me if this has been asked before.  Will coil splitting an alnico nailbomb diminish it's output and tone?

I got a Mexican Strat and I hate the humbucker so looking at alnico nailbomb and Irish tour singles.  I want to coil split the nailbomb as I do like out of phase tones on a Strat but I don't want to loss anything from the nailbomb when run on it's own.  All my current guitars, before the Strat, have humbuckers so I'm a bit of a n00b with coil splitting.

When the coil split is not currently engaged the HB will run and sound just as it normally would. When the coil split is engaged one of the coils is send to ground, read turned off.
So no worries!
When wired correctly all should be well. Donīt know if you wanne go for an autosplit (one position on the switch being normal, the neck is split NB with middle, etc.) or if you want a push pull poti, but if either is done correct you will still have the normal NB at your disposal as a standard option.

I plan to auto split and I'd buy a pre wired guard so all I have to do is wire the grounds and output jack.  That way I know it's done right.  I've never much soldering beyond an out put jack or connecting a pick up.

Thanks for the response too.  It's taken care of my only concern so now it's getting the money then enjoying some nice BKP's :)

With those soldering skills you could possibly do a lot more if you ever get into the situation where you could btw. As long as you can make a proper solder connection you should be able to cook up most wirings yourself if you tried. It really is easier than it seems. With all the diagramms out there a lot can be done. Ofc you will make mistakes, but those are usually easy to spot with things like the tap test (using something like a screwdriver to tap on the pole pieces to see which coils are on).

For example a autosplit is pretty much connecting the PU as usual and soldering the white and green wire to the right lug on the switch. Shockingly easy really.

Just saying that you should not be afraid to try it sometime, maybe on an older axe or something. Always a handy skill to have.
