PG Blues in 3 pickup configuration
« on: July 15, 2013, 09:53:11 AM »
Looking at a 3 pickup Gibson type guitar I was intrigued by the idea of installing a PG Blues set, with the possibility of the out of phase pickup either in the neck or middle position. It would need some fiddling with the wiring to get the full potential, possibly a volume control for each pickup and a more varied way of combining the pickups. I was just wondering whether anyone here had already tried this and was the end result any good?

Now I donīt know how exactly one would realise this wiring whise but the first thought in my mind was as always an extravagant wiring plan (as I always tend to do):
Get a PG Blues set and a HS P90 (like the blue note) with screen for the middle. Now if you had a five way, you could have neck, neck + middle, middle, bridge + middle, bridge.
Now one of the PGs is always out of phase with the rest, I think its the neck.
Now if you were to wire the middle up to have a push pull swtich its phase or do series / parralel (probably the later) you would add another level of sound.
Finally include a switch that can put on only the two HBs alone for that classic in between Green sound.

That might give you a lot of options.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Thanks for the response, I like the idea of adding a P90 to the mix for a bit more versatility. I've just picked up a second hand Epi SG/LP Custom which may become the victim for some experiments. The existing wiring has 3 volumes and one tone with the middle pickup always on, just turn down its volume to get rid of it, so all 3 pickups are available with the toggle in the middle position.

One apparent issue is the centre position is sounding a bit muted, presumably having all three volumes in circuit is throttling the sound a bit, even when one or two are turned down to 0. Anyone have any ideas on how to counter this whilst keeping the option of having 3 pickups active?
