I like this kind of music, always have, and recently I've been checking out some newer bands who (I think) fall into the doom genre, broadly speaking (I'm never very comfortable with trying to pigeonhole music into all these genres and sub-genres, but they can be useful sometimes, I guess).

I very much prefer the more melodic, '70s-influenced, old-fashioned trad metal end of the spectrum.  I do like the really sludgy, grindy bands like Sleep as well, but I can only take them in small doses, to be honest.

Can't claim to be any kind of expert - the bands I like are probably only the better known ones and I'm probably just scr@ping the surface really.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Yea, I really don't like the doom tag. It gets used alot for bands that I wouldn't call doom. When I think of doom I think of the more 70s tinged stuff that usually has satanic imagery and lyrics along with it, the kinda stuff we briefly discussed in the what are you listening to thread.

Malleus in action :) Love their art!

I like my stoner/psychedelic rock. Really liked these guys when I caught them supporting Monster Magnet.

Haven't really listened to any of this stuff for ages but I don't reckon you can beat a bit of Electric Wizard, as good as it gets!

I can't really watch these YouTube clips on my sh!tty computer, which is a bit frustrating.  :(

Still, since it's all rather quiet and there's just a handful of us here, here's a question:

:?: Do you think actually being a stoner adds to (or maybe detracts from) the appreciation of this kind of music?  Or does it make no difference at all?  :?:

Obviously you may be unable to answer, I don't know your personal habits (for the record, I have never been stoned.... unless I inhaled more than I realised at those Hawkwind gigs in the late '70s)

I'm not a stoner, but I love stoner/psychedelic/space rock. I also like goth rock and am in no way gothically inclined :)

Really, really embarrassingly dumb question, but can you give examples of "goth rock" bands?

It just makes me think of the Cure and the Sisters of Mercy, but I have no idea if I'm thinking along the right lines or not.

Yeah, Fields of the Nephilim, etc. Stuff like that.

All About Eve and The Cult are usually bundled up under the Gothic Rock banner also.

EDIT: just looked at genres in my iTunes library, quite a lot comes under the tag of gothic rock/metal in there: The Gathering, After Forever, Sentenced, PoisonBlack, For My Pain, ReVamp, 69 Eyes, Type-O Negative, Lacuna Coil, Evanesence, Paradise Lost and Tiamat in addition to those mentioned before (Sisters/Cult/All About Eve/FotN). Seems I have quite a lot of that!

Ah, thanks for that!   :D

I like some Type O and Paradise Lost stuff.  And I do like ReVamp, Evanescence (and We Are The Fallen) quite a lot, in fact I often like rock bands with female vocalists, although I'm not so keen on, for example, Lacuna Coil or Within Temptation.  I guess I'm confessing to liking the less "cred" bands there, but I simply like the melodies....

So maybe I'm a little into goth rock too.

I have fairly diverse tastes to be fair and I've got some far, FAR more embarrassing things in my CD collection than any you've mentioned ( which I have too :) ).

Good question but I'm far too ripped to give a good answer.

Anyway, tonight I am listening to Royal Thunder - yet another band with a female frontperson!

I don't reckon being high adds or takes anything away from it. Nobody I know who smokes listens to this sort of thing though (more into electronic stuff, especially the more ambient/laid back stuff), if that helps answer the question at all!

Never really thought about it. I guess it just goes with the territory in the same way that Doom bands slaughter goats for black magic and Death Metalers $%&# corpses. Well, except they actually are following through where as the former rarely are. From an appreciation point of view nothing is detracted from a sober listener but I would certainly imagine there's a resonance with those who do partake in such things ;) Bands like Weedeater, Bongzilla and Bongripper aren't exactly subtle about it. Keeps it out of the mainstream too.

Drop out of life with bong in hand Follow the Smoke toward the Riff filled Land
Proceeds the Weedian Nazareth.
The molten fire flowed up toward Zion
Flight of the Nazarene to seek the Cheribum
Rides out believer with the spliff aflame
Marijuana escapes earth to cultivate
