HB set for versatile, series/parallel/split modes
« on: August 01, 2013, 11:29:07 AM »
I've got a build currently being ran through its paces with the help of the wonderful Giles Lescot, of Lescot guitars. Sg inspired shape, neck-through 3 ply mahogany/maple/mahogany neck, swamp ash wings, with a 3 way mini toggle for each hb and I need some suggestions.

What I'm currently considering is the vhii, a-war pigs, riff raffs or mules, though I've never owned a set of bkps so I can't choose with any first hand experience.

I'd like a set that firstly is useful in parallel/split, that can give me a wide range to play around with. I play a bit of everything, from finger picked jazz with a touch of chorus, to classic rock, fuzzy, driven funk and blues, with some prog metal and rock on the side.

Zeppelin, Zappa (classic, "shut up and play yer guitar/make a jazz noise hear sort of sound) , tool, funkadelic, buckethead, demon fuzz, Charlie hunter, John frusciante, Floyd. I know that's a broad list of artists for those who are familiar with them, and obviously no pickup combination could do it all perfectly, but hopefully it gives a good idea.

Warpigs are a long way from the other choices!  If you were to consider an alnico contemporary set you might want to think more along the lines of the Rebel Yell, Holy Diver, and Crawler sets.  There's nothing on your list of bands that would seem to call for the Warpig or even the Nailbomb (although that *might* be okay for Tool).

You might want to check out the Abraxas. It is often described as a PAF on steroids and it can pull off great cleans as well as distorted tones. It is said to split really well too.

If you want a rounder or fatter tone have a look at the Crawler or the Holydiver. The Rebel Yell could be a possibility as well, but it might be to bright in your guitar.

I had considered the war pigs from the prominent talk of their versatility, even going so far that jazz artists in France were making use of them. Plus their ridiculous output would lend to a strong coil split mode. But thanks for the warning, I'm sort of fishing in the dark at this point haha.

Mr air I really like the sound of the abraxas sound clips, do you think it would be best combining it with something else or the calibrated set?

If you go for the Abraxas I think a calibrated set will suit you well. The bridge has some power that can drive an amp, but still retain a classic voicing and the neck should be quite similar that of the Mule.

Check out these clips of the abraxas in a LP made by forum member HTH.

Consedering the amount of ash and maple in this guitar and the fact you want good split tones, I would -  as others suggested - look at the Abraxas.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
