Doubt with BK pickup choice
« on: August 02, 2013, 12:18:57 AM »
Hey guys!!
I have a doubt that you may solve. I have a Jackson RR24 with one EMG 81, and I'm a bit tired of its too "electric" sound. I am decided to get a BK but I don't know which! The guitar body is made of alder wood and the whole guitar is quite light, so I thought a Warpig could be good, but also a Painkiller, Aftermath or Nailbomb. I play heavy/thrash and 80īs stuff with lots of fast picking on the rhythm guitar, and I also play solos in my group. I have a Marshall JCM800 too. Anyone could help? I know nothing about sound or woods or anything XD so any help will be welcome.
Thx a lot!! :D

You might want to have a look at the Holy Diver. I haven't played it, but it's said to work really well in alder bodied guitars and it has a great voicing for 80s metal. Another option could be the Miracle Man which is often said to be a great thrash pickup.

I think a painkiller might be too bright in your guitar unless you downtune a good deal, but again this is based on what I've read here as I haven't played one.

I don't think the Painkiller would be right in that guitar. The Aftermath is very modern and dry sounding while the Nailbomb is brutally aggressive and more 90's Thrash than anything else. It sounds to me that either the Holydiver or Miracle Man would work best for what you want. The Holydiver is more versatile, has sweeter leads and although its natural home is 80's Metal, with an overdrive pedal it will go well beyond that. The Miracle Man takes off where the Holydiver finishes, though there is a large crossover. The Miracle Man loses some sweetness and versatility but its more aggressive nature means it lends itself a little better to Thrash/

I didn't vote at all as I just think you have better options than the ones mentioned in your poll. If I had to choose one pickup for you, I'd go with the Miracle Man as the best suited to your requirements.

+1 to Miracle Man
Your guitar is a neck thru maple with alder wings - so really it's the maple that is driving the tone.
From experience I would say Miracle Man - esp for mid to late 870s metal/thrash

I vote for the Holydiver or the Miracle Man. I own both and they are great for Thrash and 80's stuff as others here have pointed out, especially the Holydiver sounds great in my Jackson DK2M (Alder Body, Maple Neck and Fretboard).

I've written reviews for both pickups, maybe it helps you:

I really don't know, but I'm inclined to trust Feline's knowledge on the neck-thru construction.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM
