Rio grande Vs Bare knuckle
« on: March 07, 2006, 10:57:15 AM »
hi, this is kind of following on from my post on the Maverick guitar (alder bodied suer strat design)...Im thinkin of changing my bridge pickup...Ive come cross a Rio Grande Crunchbox and it sounds pretty good...have any of you heard it in action???

Its a choice between that, a nailbomb or a miracle man

For sounds ranging from Muse, Rammstein and experimetal stuff....so pretty versatile, lots of nice gain and crunch, but nothing too harsh

I'm guessing you wont get a great response from here as I'm guessing most people here only use BK's. Maybe try Harmony Central forums although alot of people there are gear snobs and wont have anything but some cr@ppy ancient Fender pickups in their strats

They are ok, i have heard a guitar with those Rio's in.It just sounded ok no better than SD or Dimarzio to my ears. Bk's are just in a higher league though.

I remember Tim saying a while back that he had replaced all the Rio Grande pups in Matt Bellamy's (from Muse) guitars with a selection of Mules, Nail Bombs, and Mississippi Queens.

I'm got a set of Mules in my Epi Les Paul and love them, and others say that you can do metal with them. Maybe Nailbombs as a heavier alternative? I'm not a metal guitarist though...

I had Rio Grandes in my Les Paul Standard (BBQ + Texas) and my Reissue Tele (Muy Grande + Tallboy). I have replaced them with BKP Crawlers (LP) and Boss (Tele). The RGs were OK but not as good as the BKPs. It was Mansons in Exeter (who make Matt Bellamy's guitars) who recommended the BKPs - they sell both Rios and BKPs - most of the guys who work in there have fitted BKPs to their own guitars.

Hi, I've got an Epi les paul standard with a Rio Grande BBQ in the bridge, (got it cheap off ebay) thought I,d give it a whirl, definately better than stock, but not as good as mules. Tim said in an old post the component quality wasn't very good as he's rewound some in the past. Meanwhile I'm saving for a mule for the neck
