extraction
« on: September 06, 2013, 11:29:11 AM »
i had a tooth out yesterday. it didn't hurt obviously, since strong local anesthetic was used.

but my gosh, today i feel like the wind has been well and truly knocked out my sails - no energy, bit disoriented, really tired.

at least the pain has stopped, but this has knocked me for six and i'm really surprised by that.

I had a molar out the other month and it was HELL! I feel for you.

I developed the dreded "dry socket" as well and had to go on antibiotics... My advice is take it really, really easy and if you get a disgusting taste in your mouth in the next 3 days.

Go back to the dentist ASAP!

Good luck dude.

(BTW - I'm off to Poland next week to get a quote for a dental implant £800 vs £4000 in the UK and most Polish dentists are better qualified as maxiofacial specialists)

Thanks for the advice Dave. I may eventually ask you about that Polish dentist if I find I'm missing the tooth.

Cool mate.

Remember there is no rush with the implant because the major bone loss is in the first 6 months then you have to wait at least another 6 months before the base of an implant can be fitted.

If you don't miss it don't bother but just have the dentist check if any teeth next to the extraction are going to "tip" or move over time without support.

Dentist really don't tell you enough before they extract.

As an aside: Don't talk to any Eastern Europeans about your extraction because they will insist the tooth could have been saved in their country... It will make you feel bad.

I think they might be right because British dentistry is influenced by the NHS banding system which created financial incentives for certain proceedures.

Also NEVER pay for the hygenist as this service should be done by the DENTIST under NHS band 1, they already got paid for it.. It's a pure cash cow for the bar-steward practice.  :x

In a bizarre twist of synchronicity, my wife is having an extraction today.

She had root canal work done on that tooth when she was 16, and it was fine until last year when she had to have it redone.  It's not been right since, and so we're having it out now.

Not sure if she's going for the implants - they are SO expensive!  Interested in how you get on in Poland, Dave...

I've never had to have a tooth extracted (and won't need to hopefully) but reading this thread has led to me doing some research on the web. The "dry socket" thing intrigued me so I did some searching on t'internet. Ouch!
I think I hate being indecisive.

Wow, lucky you!  I've had quite a few, including wisdom teeth.  The last one a few years ago was the only bad one, they did it under "sedation" but in effect it was general anaesthetic, I was completely unconscious and felt very weird afterwards.  It got infected too.

I've still got one wisdom tooth left, they told me it's very deep in the jaw and will be very tough to extract if it ever needs doing.  So fingers crossed on that.....
