Caprice No. 5

Heya fellas,

I've been working on my alternate picking technique the last few weeks and thought about ways and exercises to progress further, including lots of videos, books, tipps I got here on the forum and the infamous DVDs from Guthrie Govan and John Petrucci.

Well today somehow Niccolo Paganinis Caprice No. 5 sprung to my mind, probably due to the fact that Steve Vai was beaten by Karate Kid in the final guitar duel in Crossroads, so I thought why not download the tab and have a nice new exercise?

So I did so and looked up some videos on Youtube of people playing the song. First I stumbled across this fella:

Pretty good I thought to myself, this will take some practice. Next up was this guy:

Wow, I will really need to pactice! Then I saw Jason Becker playing the song:

Dammed. I quit guitar. This is impossible.
I have the tab. I will practice. But seeing Jason Becker pull this off is just depressing!

All those versions sounded awful!  The classical guitar one was the best but still leave it to the violin players it sounds far better sounds like a right row on guitar.

I learned how to play Winter a few years ago from the violin transcription. There are some insane arpeggios in that section! Overall, sounded really good.

I think those all sounded quite horrible; the acoustic one was by far the best sounding one.

I'm a bit ashamed to admit that this was the 1st thing that sprung to mind when I read the title of the piece in the OP  :lol:

While it's certainly true that the classical guitar and the violin versions sound the best, I'm not a classical guitar player and all I have at my disposal to play this piece is in fact my electric guitar. So I will compromise on the sound in favour of my alternate picking  :lol:

Brow: that's exactly the scene that inspired me to tackle the Caprice. Just watched Crossroads the other day haha. Fun facts: all the guitar parts of the duel where recorded by Steve Vai except for the Blues Slide stuff that was done by Ry Cooder. So he's kinda getting beaten by himself there. Oh and the rendition of the Caprice in the Movie is called "Eugene's Trick Bag" referring to the final note Karate Kid bends that is played on the 29th fret of the guitar ^^
