Unpotted AII Mules in a 335
« on: September 15, 2013, 01:23:20 PM »
Hello,

I already have a 335 with potted AII Stormy Mondays in and the tone is superb.  I bought a similar 335 recently and want to try unpotted AII Mules - open tone, vintage but with a little more bite.

What are your thoughts?  Good move, or will the Mules be too bite-y and not mellow enough?

Thanks,
Mike

I think a set of unpotted Mules will sound superb in a 335, but it depends on what tones you want to get from the guitar.

Mules are AIV, perhaps you can get them with AII-magnets, but wouldn't that be close to Stormies?
Mules do have a lovely crispiness, but never sound shrill. They are very balanced.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

How A2 Mule differ from A4 Mule? More mids, less highs than A4 version?
SL2H with HDs, Custom super-strat with VHIIs, Yngwie-strat with Sinners and KV-2 with PK/CS set

I'm not sure BKP will sell you a set of AII Mules, anyway - they're reluctant to move away from standard spec nowadays.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Some helpful points here gents, many thanks.

I think this is leading me towards unpotted Stormy's. I assume such a thing exists?

What about PG Blues?  I have unpotted SM's in my 335 and think they are great, but for something slightly different PG Blues are a little hotter and have the out of phase sound in the middle setting.
So many pickups, so little time
