nailbomb vs miracle man which one is better for me?
« on: September 28, 2013, 06:11:31 PM »
i have 92 gibson lp custom, and i wanna change pickups for rock/metal. (but not a emg things)

i love zakk wylde/john petrucci's sound, then should i go with miracle man? or nailbomb will be better for me? every time i google it or ask someone they say 'MM suck, go NB' but they never say why MM is suck, and why NB is cool.

i really wonder why people hate MM, and why love NB. do you guys know about that?

personally i'm pretty interested in the MM and have almost bought one . some day maybe. a nailbomb would sound good in an LP but i think the MM is more what you're looking for.

I have both and both are great pickups! I really think people shouldn't say one them sucks!

EDITED
I also think they are quite differently tonally, and for a Les Paul and a Zakk Wylde sound, the Miracle Man is the definitely the way to go!
For that thick Petrucci mids and more rounded highs, the Nailbomb however would be a better fit.

My thought too. The MM obviously does Wylde, while for Petrucci the Cbomb is usually the recommendation (with a CS neck usually).

For Petrucci there are two other options though, for the older sounds the HD bridge seems to be interesting too and for the old lead sounds the AM neck does those wonderfully (Awake aera and such).
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Yeah I'd say that the choice here would be between the MM and the C-Bomb. Slart had the A-Bomb, which is completely different and really not suited to what you are wanting to do.  I have experience with the A-Bomb - which is a great pickup but not for what you want to do - and haven't used either of the other two but based on my experience of the Cold Sweat (closer to the Miracle Man in some ways) and the A-Bomb (closer to the C-Bomb) I'd agree with what Alex said above.  Actually I voted Miracle Man but I was thinking 'A-Bomb' but it could well be that the C-Bomb is a great all-rounder for you.  Both Nailbombs do have a certain amount of 'hairiness' which I'm not sure you'd like but that is much more pronounced in the A-Bomb, although the thick mahogany of the Les Paul does seem to tone that down somewhat.

You'll want the MM's if you want a Zakk Wylde sound.... I find most loud ceramic magnets through a Marshall can nail Zakk Wylde's tone pretty good, where the Alnico V Nailbomb is voiced differently.

For a Petrucci sound however, I'd think a Cold Sweat would be the one for you? Regardless, the NB's tone in a Les Paul has a little too much going on for Petruccis sound, where the MM would be closer.  I have a Nailbomb in an alder bodied guitar, and that could probably pull off a Petrucci sound, but it's much brighter in a Les Paul so I wouldn't say that's going to be a good match.

I could tell you to get the Nailbombs all day because it is what *I* would do especially in a Les Paul (or the Rebel Yell which is what I use in my Les Paul), but you have made it pretty clear you want the MMs to me.
Real men turn their volume to 11!

The nailbomb will definitely do petrucci bridge tones.

The nailbomb will definitely do petrucci bridge tones.

It does alright in my alder bodied ESP but it will be a little brighter in a mahogany/maple bodied Les Paul.  Although, through a Mesa it would probably be acceptable (I prefer the Marshall sound myself)

The Cold Sweat is a great pickup.

No problems with pinch harmonics.  If anything I've found harmonics a little too easy to get with this pickup on my SG ... it's forced me to clean up my playing  ;)

miracle man
but a ceramic nailbomb might do
in the end, the amps and pedals will make the biggest difference

My main concern would be how dark MM might sound in thick mahogany body. I have CBomb in similiar guitar (mahogany body/neck, flame maple top, rosewood fretboard) and it does sound quite dark, Im affraid MM might be even darker. Dark but not muddy. Would anyone agree with that?

I have the A-Nailbomb set in a PRS custom 24 and the Miracleman in a custom 22. I also had the Coldsweat set in a Ibanez J custom. The Nailbomb is a great pickup but the Miracleman is way more suited for what you want to play....It is modern, tick, slightly scooped and compressed. I get realy close to petrucci tone thru my Mesa Mark IIC+. For neck you should go with the coldsweat to stay in the Petrucci vibe. This setup sounds great for modern and prog metal in general.
