More bass and warmth from a bridge P90??
« on: October 05, 2013, 11:23:31 PM »
I have just bought in a Blue Note P90 which I have built into a Sollophonic guitar, and sounds very good. Something similar to this in fact.

This got me thinking though.

I have a lovely LP Melody Maker which I love,  but I find the single Gibson P90 in the bridge a bit harsh for the soul band I play in.  I don't want to mod the guitar too much, yet I want to use its simplicity.

Looking into putting a Supermassive or a Pig into this to warm up the tone a bit so I can still use this no frills guitar a bit more.

Any opinions?

What kind of music and amp you play? Is that Melody Maker mahogany/maple neck?

Using it in a soul/funk covers band, and while folk may say this isn't the first choice of guitar for this, I want to use it sometimes. I use Teles, a PRS SE Singlecut Soapbar and a dual single coil Melody Maker usually, but this guitar is so nice to play, I want to use this one sometimes, especially as it is so simple and straight.

Its the "luddite" in me that wants to get a chunkier tone out of the bridge slot on this. So more girth, but still cleanish. I use amps running on a bit of breakup, but not by much.

What I can tell you is that when comparing the Stockholm / Supermassive to the MQ / Nantucket you notice that the later are distincly vintage in the base sound. Powerful, precise and all the good stuff.
The SH / SM on the other hand might be a lot more fatter and powerful yet, but it is also distinctly modern in sound to my ears, so beware.

Maybe its just not possible to get much more bass out of the bridge slot, maybe I should keep this guitar for more lairy stuff.

Might be a whise decision, yet I gotta say that when it comes to versatility something like the MQ / Nantucket is hard to beat.
It is not quite as great as the Mule in that regard, but the beauty of P90s is that they can sing or scream when you want them to and have all the the SC sensitivity and expression while having all the crusing possiblitys of a HB (even more imho).

They go higher and lower than a HB, retain more bottom end definition and have that certain middle growl which I love to death.

What I am trying to say is that while I do not know what the specs of your current P90 are the Nantucket is lickely to be a upgrade and can do wonders in range with the simple use of a the volume and in your case mostly the tone knob.

I would in any case shoot a mail to the BKP guys directly. They can most certainly tell what woukd work best for you.
I am interrested in their answer as well as I love the P90s I had to far and also really love the idea of a resonator with a P90 or mini HB.

For versatility I would go no further than a Nantucket and use the tonepot on the guitar, like you steer a tele.
