What do you do when you aren't sure about Tim's suggestion?
« on: October 07, 2013, 12:32:31 PM »
I emailed Tim and asked what pickup I should use in my RG1527. My amp is an EL34 modded ENGL Blackmore and I play progressive / tech death, along the lines of Animals As Leaders and Necrophagist. I told him I needed something that would produce a huge upper-mid range crunchy rhythm tone in the bridge (like Adam Jones rhythm tone on Lateralus), but also fluid and precise leads from both the bridge and neck pickups. A good clean tone is equally important to me. I need something that can produce a bright and full bodied clean tone in the neck and / or middle position.

He recommended the new Juggernaut pickups, and though I know it's probably too close to release to tell what they're really like, I just don't dig the rhythm sound in any of the clips that I've heard. :? The clean and lead samples do sound great, but I was hoping for rhythm tones similar to the clips of the Emerald, Rebel Yell, and Painkiller clips that I've listened to.

Though I hold the opinions of Tim, Nolly, and Misha in the highest regard, I figured there'd be no harm in asking you guys for a second opinion. Should I go ahead and try the Juggernauts? Or do you guys think the pickups I mentioned (or others that I didn't) would better meet my criteria? Any additional info would be greatly appreciated!  :)

Understandible to be a little wary given they are new pickups and not a lot is known about them, but I'd trust Tim, he has been spot on every time for me.
Given your description and his recommendation now makes me want to try them even more!

I would put a lot of weight into Tim's suggestion.  And I think the Juggernauts probably are what you're looking for, they're a little better for detuned and bass-heavy sounds than say the Rebel Yell from what I gather while still maintaining a lot of midrange.

I'm not sure about the clean tone, but most BKP's clean up better than expected.
Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.

Usually when I ask Tim for a suggestion, it tends to match what other people on the forum are suggesting

and you're missing the main point
everyone here is looking for an excuse to order a juggernaut
you just got the best excuse you could have and you didn't even try

in the worst case scenario, if you're not a 100% satisfied you're getting the brand new most hyped pickup set of the season and its not gonna lose its value so soon, so you can sell it quick and order another set
you're also backed up by BKP's return policy

Yeah when I bought my nail bomb I didn't really like it so I sold it and made nearly 100% of what I paid

Well I can't say that I'm desperate to buy a Juggernaut but I can see why Time would suggest it as a good option for what you're after. I must say that when reading your post, I was thinking of an A-Bomb because that has all those upper mids you seem to like and for a really hot pickup, it's surprisingly open sounding. It's also super tight and very aggressive.

Most of the time Tim has been right for me and when he hasn't, I'd say it's usually down to me not describing what I'm after very well. My best advice would be to at least seriously consider Tim's suggestion and if you're sure it's not for you, which you are perfectly entitled to do, then have a look at an A-Bomb instead.

Like Eric says, try them and if you don't like them, send them back to swap them for another set.

Haha, you make a good point. I wasn't even aware of their return policy. That definitely makes my decision easier. I talked to Tim about it more in depth and he was positive they could nail the sound that I'm after, so I'll probably place an order when I get back into town.

yeah i'm pretty sure as long as the condition of the pickup remains very good and the wire isnt cut you can return them. i probably wouldve gone this route if i lived in Europe but it would just be a hassle for me in Massachusetts
