Just joined the bkp family
« on: November 25, 2013, 12:05:14 PM »
Just ordered my first set of bkp's, a riff raff bridge and mule neck both covered to replace the stock prs #6's that are in my prs satin finish single cut. The guitar is all mahogany with a rosewood board, so it's very dark and has a lovely midrange honk to it. I just felt the guitar could be opened up a bit as I found the stock pups a bit mushy and lacked some dynamics under hi gain settings. I usually sit in the classic rock/blues camp as far as tone go's, but my new amp covers hi gain too.

Had the mules or black dogs mind, but after a chat with Ben at bkp, he recommended the set I have ordered. Can't wait to get them fitted!!

Cheers.

Welcome to the family! Excellent choice in PUs, the RR Mule will really make things come alive and cut with so much character. Get back to us when you got them, exited to see what you think.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Hi and welcome! That's a good PAF-set. I don't own the RR, but I have a Mule-neck. Best PAF-neck I ever had.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Well I've had the new pups fitted about a week now and all I can say is wow! What a difference. The guitar didn't sound bad at all before and it was a hard decision to mess with my favourite guitar, but I'm glad I did. The pups have really opened up the guitar, the mule in the neck is similar sounding to the prs stock but has so much more clarity, punch and dynamics. Also has a much more vocal/expressive quality. The riff raff in the bridge has less output than the stock prs #6 but this really opens things up, the bass is much tighter and the pup has a lot more edge to it, just the right amount of edge and this really balances out the guitar. The balance between the two pups is also much better, and the tapped sounds are much better too.  The biggest difference I have noticed is how well these pups clean up on the volume pot. Also how they handle hi gain without the loss of dynamics like the prs pups.

The amps I have are the Marshall sl5 combo and a Marshall jvm half stack. The biggest improvement is on the jvm, as the hi gain sounds are now much better. I also installed a bkp jenson .022 cap in the guitar so I'm sure this has helped with the improvements.

Only trouble is i now want to upgrade the pups in all my guitars!!

Glad to hear you have the same experience as we all do. Problem, as you noted, is that once you have seen the light you realize how dark it has been ;)

Congrats! I love BKP's lower output pickups. I have a riff raff in one of my most 'metal' guitars, also recommended by Ben :)
Black Dog (b), Abraxas (b), The Mule (n), Mississippi Queen (n), Trilogy Suite (m)

Had: Riff Raff 7 (b), Painkiller 8 (b)

This is one of the sets I am seriously considering for my LP Custom. It's gonig to be a coin flip, either the Raff Raffs or Mules.....or like you did, Riff Raff bridge and Mule neck. I have a different problem, however, I want to have both of those pickup sets, so I need to get another Les Paul.

Ah well, it's nice there's still something to be desired. Anyway, both sets appeal to me. Now I have to get me a LP.

All this talk of les Paul's, it's a good thing I'm getting one at the end of January! Got a nice bit of bonus coming from work and my missus has given me permission to get one for myself. We have a baby on the way, due mid February, and she has told me to get one before then as the baby will be taking the rest of my money for the foreseeable future!!

Was gonna get a LP traditional rather than the standard, with a view to putting some mules in it. Will wait and see how the 57' pups are first though.
