Orange Rockerverb Question
« on: December 07, 2013, 07:31:35 PM »
So, I've played the Rockerverb MKII 100 a bunch of times now and I remember the 50 watt version sounding a lot better. The 50 was brighter and seemed more raw and aggressive, but I never AB'ed the two amps, but I did play them through the same cab (Orange 4X12) and with my guitars. Do the 50 and 100 watt versions actually sound that different? Usually when I compare the same model amp at different wattages (such as rectifiers and stilettos and laneys) the differences where subtle.

I used to own a rockerverb mark i but never got around to playing the ii but apparently there and prosand cons to each.

I cant comment on the 50/100 watt versionsof this amp but I currently have a 5150 iii amp which has 3 channels on both versions.  The 100 watt has more features but the unusual difference is that on channel 2 of the 50 watt amp it has more gain and apparently eddie wanted this......... but channel 2 of the 100 watt head is more medium gain .....so any way i guess amp companies do this some times intentionally.

I own the 50 watt MKI Rockerverb-head. I think the main differences between the 50/100 are the powertubes. Mine has four 6V6's. The 100 wattt MkI has EL34's. The MKII 50 has EL34's too.
Personally I favour the 6V6 Rockerverb, which to my ears sounds a bit more lush and creamy then the EL34 version. A tad more classic too. I can nail SRV: first gain stage of the drivechannel, mastervolume at noon. Mine is quite agressive in the uppermids, but the amp balances quite nice with the mastervolume past noon, bringing up the lowend dramatically. It's quite loud then.
That's why I use another tubeamp for rehearsels and small gigs.
