Capacitors..
« on: March 14, 2006, 12:12:05 PM »
I received my 630v capacitor from Maplin today, for modding my minimass, as 50v was too small and just popped. Anyway, the thing is bloody HUGE, almost half the size of my Minimass haha. Definately no way of fitting it in there! So, does anyone make a 10uF, higher voltage capacitor like this that is the size of the smaller 50v one I had? I dunno if the 100v ones will be enough? What do you think?

Cheers

I'm about to order from uk.Farnell.com , if you have a look on their site you can see the dimensions of the components. If you find anything I can add it to my order. It is possibly the worst site in the world but there's lots of options!!

Might be worth asking them if you can return the capacitor for a refund if it's too big.

Yeah I've rang em up, got myself a return number, so I'm gonna get it sent back tomorrow. Hayden, I'll have a look on that site, then if they have what I'm after then I can paypal you the money if thats ok? You guys think 100v will be ok or would I need more?

100v should be OK, or more if it will fit!

Remember - it's not the voltage that wasn't enough, it was the current handling that made the cap explode.

Oh.. so will a higher voltage cap even do anything? I dont know a lot about electronics as you can probably tell

That would probably work but it's big!

Was it a non polarized cap you blew??

Just thought, your cap may have been 40v DC, usually the AC voltage is about 60% the DC voltage. So when the amp's working the cap would be toast!

Yeah its non polarised, forgot to mention that. The second "VISHAY BC COMPONENTS" one doesnt say if its non polarised or not, unless theres something I'm missing.. Basically I have around a 4cm height, 2-3cm depth and around 4cm width to fit one in.. It doesnt have to be 10uF does it, I mean 22uF or something could sound EVEN better (I like a bright tone).

EDIT- shiteTTT! It says on the Maplin return form - "A charge of 20% of the invoice value, with a minimum charge of £10 will be levied of Goods "Not Wanted" or "incorrectly ordered"...All goods returned under this provision must be received by us within 14 days of original invoice date"

Does this mean I'll have to pay at least a tenner to return it?!? Rediculous.

Email them and say what about the distance selling directive - it gives a 7 day cooling off period for all mail order transactions!

Those caps are both non polarized. You could get a couple and see which works for you.
