PRS CE22 PUPs
« on: January 16, 2014, 09:58:50 AM »
Hi,

I have a bolt on neck PRS CE22 with dragon II PU's and that 5 way rotary switch. I'm looking for something a bit warmer, fuller, organic, especially in the neck position but still ok with single coil positions. Mainly low to mid gain tones, maybe more modern voicing for contrast. One of the sounds I love is the Seymour Duncan Hot Rail in a Strat so maybe that's a good point of reference.

Any suggestions for a set of PU's for this and can BKP supply them with the correct magnet phasing for the oddball switching system?

Thanks  :D

Warmer, fuller and slightly more modern is the Crawler.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

It depends a little depending on what year CE you have. What kind of woods is it made out of?

Crawler might be a good idea as Darren wrote, but it's got quite high output yet retain some of the PAF magic. If you want a PAF style humbucker The Mules would be a good option, that would be somewhere along the 57/08. And if you want something similar to a hot PAF or a 59/09 a set of Blackdogs would be great. For even more output then go with the Crawler as suggested.

Write that you have a PRS with the 5way/rotary switch and they'll get the specs right for the switching system, no problem.

Thanks

It's an early CE22 - I bought it sometime between 1991 and 1993. I guess that makes it an Alder body with maple top? The neck looks maple with a rosewood board.

It feels a rather bright guitar compared to the mahogany Mira I recently got.

I've always loved the way it plays but never really liked the HB tones. The Single coil tones are great though.

As the Mira has some pretty good classic rock vintage tones, I thought I'd go a bit more contemporary on this one. The Steve Stevens set has been suggested. That Crawler set looks very interesting too. Also, the VH II set looks like it was voiced for a guitar of this sort of build.

Hmmmmm.... I'm going in circles reading and listening to all the clips

Would have assumed it's mahogany body, but maybe the early ones were alder.

I second the Crawler recommendation, especially if it's a bright guitar. Abraxas set would be a fine option, too.

Cheers Stephan

Crawler or Abraxas are good options. Abraxas/Mule-neck is also a nice combo.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
