Finally ordered a Juggernaut
« on: January 26, 2014, 11:45:00 PM »
well i finally ordered my juggernaut. been wanting one for a long time but was unsure about where to put it. my orange strat (shown) has had 2 pickups in it since its birth. a seymour duncan invader and (currently) a gibson dirty fingers. the SD works nice in most alder strats but this strat has a much darker voicing then my others. maybe because its a warmoth-made body and not the mexi fenders that i'm used to. i dont know. either way. i swapped it out for the gibson pup when i wanted a bit more clarity and while it helped, it still needs a bit more. and the juggernauts tone and description really intrigued me. really excited to finally have this new pickup. i was a little skeptical at first whether or not it would suit a dark voiced strat but here is what tim said.

Hi Jon

the Juggernaut would work really well in a dark voiced alder Strat - they're bright, tight and focused without sounding fierce in the highs.

Kindest Regards,

Tim

Niiiiiiice. Really looking forward to your thoughts on it! I can deffo see it work in that guitar. I see big, clear and mean sounds. With the 5150 and Peavy cab that will likely kill.

And dare I hope that you might be....the ONE?!

The one that finally delivers some more classic rock and old school metal (NWoBHM anyone?) clips and impressions of this pub I mean.

well i definitely dont play much with super low tunings and every clip i've heard has either been a 7 string or a really detuned 6string. so i'll definitely do what i can do show people how it sounds in other situations.

Very interested to hear your thoughts.  I was thinking of doing a warmoth project maybe this summer and was seriously consider maple neck / rosewood board / alder body with a pair of Juggs.  I'm kind of leaning toward a 7 string in standard tuning though.  i.e.  B E A D G B E.  I would be using it with a '93 2 channel recto.

If not a jugg, I'm thinking a warpig, holy diver, or maybe even a crawler set.

yeah i'll definitely show it off quite a bit with my dual rectifier roadster and my 5150. if you've never used warmoth, its definitely worth a shot.

You'd say Warmoth projects are comparable to production instruments, hey?  Like think Gibson / Fender / Ibanez et al.

I'm still a bit up in the air about this.  See, I wish I could get a 26.5 scale neck.  I have no idea why 7 strings are 25 scale OR 28 5/8.  If I want to play bass, I grab my bass.  A 6 string soloist body with a sound similar to a hot rodded strat would also be cool, I just really need a guitar that does something unique to justify getting another axe.  It seems that a lot of the 'modern sound' is really created by extended range  (read excessively drop tuned) guitars and to do something similar, a 7 string is a necessary investment.

From what I've read about warmoth, the workmanship is quality but a full setup is basically required, whether DIY or by a qualified luthier or tech.

One idea I had was to get an alder routed body blank along with a maple neck / rosewood board.  Then I could shape the body the way I wanted.  Risky, perhaps, but also really fun.

But, the 7 string does seem like a better idea, even if the neck is only 25"

Aside from the pickups I already listed, it would be interesting to create a project that would accommodate a painkiller.  I love the mid / upper mid boost as it is something that would work well with that mesa voice.  It's just that the cost / work goes up considerably when selecting the sorts of woods that such a project would inevitably include.  i.e.  mahogany neck and body with a maple cap.

I would also be very interested in the outcome since I have a dark sounding strat as well. I had a Holydiver in it and currently a Miracle Man. It sounded good with both but still very dark with either.

Cheers Stephan

Well, it's a downfall if you don't "want" to do the work, I suppose.  I just would need the setup / fret dress done by my tech but I'm willing to assemble what I can myself.  It's probably the closest I would get to designing / building my own instrument!!!

Sounds like it's definitely something you should do!

The Juggernaut isn't brighter than the Miracle Man, so if you're looking to brighten up the guitar, you'll need to look elsewhere.

I've just bought mine Jugg. It has not enough "good" mids for my swamp ash. It will be very cool with all maple but not my axe. I'll try a Black Hawk in the near future and if it won't be my pickup, I'll order a ceramic Nailbomb. I like the classic bonecrushing mids and full frequency response.

This is just it, right?  It's about trying to find the right match for the guitar more than it is about trying to make the pickup create the tone you want on it's own.  There is this delicate balance between the acoustic tone of the instrument, the contribution of the pickup, the tone of the amp, and then the shaping quality of the speaker and the resonance of the cab.  Finding elements that co-operate well together is tricky so for me, when I have something that works I'm very pleased and also hesitant to change it.

When I hear the recording of the Jugg with the Les Paul on the website, it sounds like it has bass, low mids, and then a big gap with the next peak being that purr on the top end.  I suspect it would work far better with a very bright axe.

I wonder if there would be a way to record electrics being played without amps and then analyze the frequency spectrum to determine the correct pickup match?

Yes, the Jugg has weak high mids. My swamp ash is a bright wood but have lows and lack of mids. This team creates a little lifeless, dark and scooped sound. At first I was happy about the great lows but after some hours of playing I missed the high mids. I think a lot about the Black Hawk and C-Bomb. Somebody compared them?

Did you play them in the same guitar? From what I read so far i believed the Juggernaut to be a bolder and higher output Holydiver. I was quite surprised to now read that it should work in a dark guitar.

Probably Cold Sweat or Rebel Yell would be the ticket to brighten up dark guitars.
