If bridge and neck are the same pickup (which has for long been the case) then obviously the neck will sound louder since strings movement has more amplitude above the neck pup than above the bridge one - this can be more or less drastic depending on the guitar, strings, pickups, gain level etc but the difference in output level is always obvious. Now if it goes to "ridiculous" you may have a wiring problem (bad solder join, bad contact on the switch, bad cable), a fried pot, or a dead (well, dying) bridge pickup.
Hmmm, sorry, not really an helpful answer I know :? Did you check your pickups and pots before wiring them ?
