Help me choose for Bare Knuckles!!!
« on: July 25, 2014, 06:34:10 PM »
Alright so I'm planning on getting a pair of BKs for my new Ibanez RG752 I just ordered. It will be played  through a Peavey 6505+ combo i also just ordered. I need a pair of pickups that will sound good on basswood. I mostly play technical death metal (Necrophagist, Spawn of Possession) and enjoy playing some neoclassical shred (Yngwie Malmsteen, Jeff Loomis).
I emailed BK and they recommended a PainKiller for the bridge and a Cold Sweat for the neck. They told me Muhammed from Necrophagist uses this combination on a couple of hist guitars (HAD NO IDEA). But I've read PainKillers aren't really that good for basswood because of basswood's middy tone. What do you guys think? Any recommendations?

If it helps I got a couple of videos on youtube you guys could check out so you can get the general feel of the music I play: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcWedNO9YGfOiIBa5D9VDxQ

Thanks!

I suppose it depends on how much you value the opinions of what you have read. Are those writers more reputable than bkp?

If a band member of one of you influences is a user then go fer it.
Having said that if the eq of the pick up matches the eq of the backing track you play with you may get lost in the mix and feel like the pickup is underperformed.

Would have guessed the Painkiller is too middy for basswood, but if BKP people say Painkiller, then maybe it's the way to go.
If you don't like it, you can return for an exchange within 2 weeks.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

If youve actually told BKP its a basswood guitar and they say its fine id go with what they say.  Do you play in a lower tuning?  Doesnt sound low but its all twiddly stuff!  I always think you can get away with more mids in lower tunings and also Mohammeds tone is very thin, tight and middy.  For most guitarist it would be a truly awful guitar tone but he pulls it off because he is so good and it fits their style.

I didnt realize Sucimez used BKP's at all theyve kept that one quiet.  If he could could actually release another album it would be cool to get him on board.

Id go with what BKP say but as an alternative id suggest a ceramic black hawk set which is known to work in basswood....I think it would work in just about any thing.   You should trust BKP direct in general though.

Yeah, I replied to their email asking if they were sure about the PK in basswood and they said basswood is fairly neutral so i'd be alright. I was considering a Ceramic NailBomb, a Juggernaut or a MiracleMan. They told me the juggernaut was a lot more middy than the PK, so I ruled that one out. The ceramic Nailbomb and the MiracleMan are pretty much my other alternatives. The only difference between them is the MM has its mids a little more scooped. But from the vids I've watched it seems that the ceramic mailbomb is to bassy.

What do you guys think? Should I consider anything else?

What do you guys think about the Aftermath? Should I consider it?. It's eq is basically the same as the Painkiller but with a little less mids.

the only other thing i can really comment on is that the ceramic nailbomb has a very aggressive nature to it. it is the exact opposite of a smooth tone.
