Good value fx pedals
« on: July 28, 2014, 01:34:19 PM »
I'm aware that there are some pedals such as the digitech bad monkey which puts boootique overdrive pedals to shame for good value but what about for modulation type fx and other experimental type pedals?

Any particular companies I should be looking at for good value and tones which offer excellent value for money?  Looking for good tones and no noise or tones loss.  Cheers

Sort of depends on exactly how cheap you want it to be, and whether you care about the sound alone or also the reliability.

I like my tonerider chorus, but it's been discontinued I think.

Well sound is paramount in an ideal world it would be reliable but......shite happens i guess!?  Only ever had a few pedals out of many where things started failing and price didnt seem to matter as one was cheap, one a middle of the road boss and a strymon.

Mooer and Joyo should be on your list.

Harley Benton Digital Delay (I believe this is a rebranded Joyo) is really good for its price; it says "digital", but it sounds more like an analogue delay.

I have the Mooer tremolo pedal and it's very very good for the money.

A lot of Boss-pedals aren't bad and yes, Mooer and Jojo and other (mini)pedals are to be looked at. TC Electronics makes nice affordable pedals too. I have bought a Spark Boost (four knob-version) for 99 euro and it's a more than decent pedal. Also look at Electro Harmonix, especially the Nano-serie. Some are really nice.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Most of my pedals are MXR.  I haven't had problems with any of their pedals yet.

I didn't like the switch on my Maxon OD-9 so I traded it to the other guitarist in our band. Personally I think Maxon are hype. I'm happier with the MXR Custom Badass Modified O.D. and it cost a lot less than the Maxon and takes up less room on my board.  He ended up with my Mooer Black Secret too.  I also let the EHX Metal Muff go to someone else.  Nice pedal but huge.

The Carbon Copy is a very nice pedal but I wouldn't call it cheap except in comparison to boutique pedals.

The ISP Decimator G-String II lives up to the hype. Not cheap but a great pedal once you learn how to use it.

I was thinking more along the lines of 30 pounds or less new or second hand so stuff like Joyo, Harley Benton/Behringer, Digitech etc I guess or any others I dont know about.

Im looking for bargains on ebay at the moment but havent won any thing yet or the seller has pulled out before I steal it off them!

I've never had a joyo pedal before.  Aside from cheaper construction are they as good as any thing re sounds and not affecting your signal?  Was thinking about the phaser.....

Are behringer/harley benton pedals just as good as boss?

No. Even if some sound good, the Boss will be more reliable and made of better components. Noise can also often be an issue with cheaper pedals. Some cheapo Tubescreamers come very close to expensive units, I think that might be because it is just such a copied design. But many others, especially the non-overdrive pedals, can be more of an issue. I have the Harley Benton/Joyo Ultimate Overdrive which many say is a Fulltone OCD clone, but the Fulltone is a lot more transparent, flexible and less noisy.

In terms of sound & build quality for the money, I think TC Electronic's Toneprint and Digitech's Hardwire series are the best deals out there.

Fair enough.  I''ll take a re look at every thing.

I was looking at a multi modulation pedal which included a phaser or maybe just getting a good phaser.

I had the MXR Phase 90 but got rid of it for some reason....... was wondering if there was some thing cheaper but at least as good but if not I'll go for the CMAT MODS Phaser. I'm always impressed with the lack of noise and transparency with their stuff and I believe in a consistent rig.

Keeping an eye on ebay and can see a Marshall modulation pedal and im currently winning on some vintage 70's phaser for peanuts too....if they dont pull out again.

I noticed mooer did a multi modulation but the reviews were consistently bad with that pedal in particular and I know with mooer you cant use batteries which I would use for gigs.  Having said their their acoustic guitar simulatator is amazing particularly for the price if any one ever wanted that sort of thing id recommend it.

If you want a Multi Modulation type pedal mate I'd have a serious look at the Line6 M5 Multi FX.

It's Modulations, Reverbs and Delays all sound great and it's abotu £100 new.

Worth a shot if you want to cover a lot of sounds for not that much money.
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......

I have owned one before and was rate impressed but dont you need line 6's own power adapter?  I cant be arsed with that and would like th option for batteries.  I have been looking at them on flea bay though....

I regret selling my M13 now loved every thing about it but didnt like any of the overdrive type stuff at all.

I will say Line 6 do modulation fx as good as any body.

I haven't tried them, but the prices on a lot of the hardwire stuff has dropped a lot recently, to the extent I'm considering some of them. If I have to pay £150 to get something "good" then something which is not a milion miles away for £30 is worth considering... but if the good stuff comes down to ~£50...

The chorus is my favorite one from the Hardwire series. I'm very picky about chorus and this pedal has great headroom and sound, especially the Jazz chorus is great.
