Wiring for guitar build
« on: August 17, 2014, 09:10:27 PM »
I have decided that I will be building my next guitar.  I'm sure this won't be the only question I ask, but it's the only question I can think of right now. What is the best wiring to use in building a guitar?  Is there a particular material, brand or resistance I should take consideration?  I plan to get a set of Juggernauts for this one!

It's old school but I like the cotton covered wire as I find it pushes back more easily when soldering and I make a neater looking job. I'd get black and white so you can organise your wiring more easily at a glance.:

Yeah, cloth wire, like in the old days. Get some good 500 or 550k pots and a 0.022 mfd capacitor, which is a good starting point. Maybe a 0.015 for the neck for a little extra highend.
Go for quality capacitors like Orange Drop or Bumble Bee.

So the wire material isn't really that big of deal then?  I understand about the capacitors and not going cheap on those.  I also like the push back cotton covered wires.  They are very simple to deal with!

What you wanne look for really is that the wire is not too flimsy mainly, but that usually is no issue. So the cloth wire is great. Then just see that you do not have it unnececarily long (but not on tension either) and you are pretty much good to go.

Maybe get some silvered solder to make it easier to get those perfect connections.

For the capacitors and pots the main thing you wanne look out of is tolerance. Get that as low as you can. A 500k pot with 10% tolerance (cheap ones have that) can actually be 450ks, which is something you can notice. BKP pots for example have 550k with 5% tolerance. Same thing goes for caps.

What I would recommend is get a bunch of cheaper caps of different values and click them in via crocko clamps to find what really is the optimal value for you. Then get a better one in that value. The values can really change not just the scope and strength of the tone pot, but also the taper.

There is also the consideration of 50s wiring vs. modern wiring and when doing modern wiring treble bleed vs. no treble bleed. If you go modern and treble bleed I strongly recommend doing the same crocko clamp trials for values of the caps and/or resistors you want to use there.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Not really. I'd say any reasonable quality wire is fine. Dodgy solder joints are much more concerning so I'd focus on getting a good quality solder.
