NPD - Maxon OD820 clone
« on: September 09, 2014, 12:12:40 PM »
Just arrived through eBay. No idea how it will be at this stage, but it's nicely made and I have good hopes.

Yeah, heres hoping! I have one of Juan Solo's Klons, though it is quite big. I was half thinking to get one of his small ones, but in the end decided to try something a bit different.

heres a gut shot from the ebay ad:

looks tidy. we'll see!

I've never tried an 820 but am curious. I think Tony has an 820 Clone, so hopefully I'll try it at the weekend.

I really like the OD820. It's not exactly my Emma Reezafratzitz, but more or less in the same ballpark.

Similar principle (op-amp OD with a clean/dirty blend) as a Klon. REALLY good OD.
The only other one I can think of is a Kingslayer, which is my personal favourite of the three.

tried this morning, sadly this one has issues :( i'll get in touch with the builder. its rather dark, and the volume control is more like a fuzz control

update: builder happy for me to return it back for a fix, which is all as it should be

All very strange. Builder could find no problem with the pedal so I the same set up with my Klone. Exactly the same fuzz tone, I wonder if it is because of the low end of the Aftermaths in the test guitar.

got the pedal back, builder was very helpful in fact.

the tone pot is changed so it gives a much more usable sweep.

the volume control still gives a fuzzy tone with certain guitars. by far the worst is my hamer with aftermaths, but some others do it a touch too.

i feel sure this is because of bass frequencies on the pedal input.

as i say, the problem also affects my klon, but not my sd-1 or od-1

i wonder if it would make sense to include an input parametric shelf filter on high end pedals to adjust low-end cut <- answers on a postcard.
generally i have found with clean boosts that the boost only works so far and then things fall apart unless you do some frequency tweaking. thats why i like to use EQ pedals as a clean boost.

overall, klon vs od820, i have to say i like them both alot. the drive seems to sound a bit different. i know people say the 820 is better than the klon, but i couldn't honestly agree with that. both are excellent, i'm pleased i have both.

I wouldn't say the 820 is "better" than the Klon; I certainly prefer it because it has more gain on tap; but at the lower end of the range, they are almost identical. I did a shootout a while back that compared a (real) Centaur w an OD820. You can hear the 820 get really gain-tastic at the end.
