Walnut Maple custom.
« on: September 17, 2014, 12:31:48 PM »
Hi all,

Well I have just had a custom shop PVX Doublecut made for me, it's a Walnut with Flame maple cap and a Five piece Walnut and Maple neck with a Maccasar fretboard. I need this guitar for classic rock through to Metallica, but no heavier. It will stay in standard tuning and be played through a Marshall  classic valve amp, that has medium gain using a tubescreamer to crank it when necessary.

I have a Gibson  les Paul Doublecut loaded with Alnico 2 pros, that handles  rhythm work and cleans up nicely, so would like this new addition to sort of be a step up (or two). Getting a cleanish sound out her would be a bonus though.

I know the Walnut kind of throws a spanner in the works as it can colour the sound more than Mahogany, call me a tart but I just love the look of it, especially with maple.

Any suggestions would be massively appreciated.

Many thanks

Fram.

Hi and welcome!
Sorry to chime in that late. Missed it. I suppose you want something vintage(hot) with some more meat/output. I would look at the Abraxas and Crawler.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I have a walnut custom guitar and I have had a couple of different sets of pickups in it, currently I have MQ's in it and before that I had Mules in it.  I actually think that you would be better off with Abraxas if you want a vintage sound as walnut is quite bright.   The Crawlers are a more neutral pickup and I like them more on bolt on neck guitars (but that's just me, I do have a set in an Epiphone Flying V which is a set neck, but I prefer the sound of the one in my PRS EG).
So many pickups, so little time
