I went looking for 60s Jazz (to go with my 60s style fretless Jazz) ... but they didn't have the one I wanted in stock.

They tried to tempt me with the Classic Vibe. Nice bass, VERY good value, but like the 6 stringers I've tried... didn't quite speak to me.

Not like this completely (for me) left-field option...

Two big firsts for me:
a) It's second hand
b) It has this, er, "70s" thing going on

But, they put it in my hands, and it is fabulous. SO solid in feel, easy to play, and it sounds YEAH!

I wasn't too sure about the looks, at first, though (for me, that is - bear in mind I was expecting rosewood board, 3-tone sunburst, tortoise-shell guard when I went out this morning).

I got them to put it on hold for an hour and went for a wander (almost bought another strat!).

Went back, played it again, and... bought it.

I own several Fenders, guitars and bass, but this is the very first USA made Fender I've ever owned.

It's an American Vintage 75 Re-issue Jazz Bass (I've checked the serial number, it was made in 2007).

It's well played-in and set up. The previous owner has already stripped the back of the neck (luckily, I'm into that type of thing). Sadly, it hasn't got all the bits that would have come with it originally - bridge and pickup cover, and thumb rest... but it's only the thumb-rest I'd actually be vaguely interested in.

And... it was less than half the price that it would have been new if they still made them. I've since had a little search to see wot real bassists think of it - quite a lot, apparently. Who cares, though? It plays like a bar-steward and cost the same as the Mexican Jazz I went out looking for.

Ladies & gentlemen: the new bass!

Awesome

I bought a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz '70s a couple of months ago that I guess was the bargain variant of this re-issue.  I'm fitting a Hipshot A-style high mass brass (chrome) bridge to it and some SD Quarter Pound pickups to it (it's not being set up for the vintage vibe, but rather for hardcore punk and crust punk).  I will probably fit Hipshot tuners too, as soon as I find out which model fits my Squier (I think it is the MIM type).  Other than the cheap bridge and tuners it is a very nice bass.  I will probably rewire it with CTS type pots and a push-pull or push-push to run both pickups in series.  I'm not sure whether I will bypass the volume and tone controls with that or use one master volume and a tone.  I guess I could also bypass the volumes and run both into a single tone pot. Anyway if I can stick with passive (rather than installing an active preamp) that will make life simpler.

I've only played it through a guitar amp in the living room so far (the "Broom-cupboard" studio gear is switched off at the moment - I spent so long in there over the past few weeks fixing up my last recording, I can't face going in there at the moment!).

But WOO! It feels and sounds fabulous.

It's got flats on at the moment, I reckon it would growl and snap hugely with round-wounds, but I was always likely to put flats on it anyway... and these are Thomastik flats, so I'm highly unlikely to take them off at the moment just to hear what round-wounds sound like on a whim!

Mods-wise, I suspect the pickups will stay (although I do have an urge to try BKP's bass pickups), but I'm likely to get a push-pull (or I might drill for a micro-switch) and sort out that parallel/series option. I don't know yet what that sounds like exactly, the wiring diagram has been sat on the desk for a year or two since I bought the fretless... But I've heard that wiring Jazz pickups in series put the bass sound squarely in the Precision ball-park. If it does, woohoo! (I like the Precision sound sometimes, but I don't get on with the guitar itself).

Yep, I've decided I'm a Jazz man...

Watching Queen at Hammersmith 75 on BBC4 at the moment, always wanted a Precision like John Deacon's woody one... But I don't really get on with them when I try them. The fretless Jazz I got a few years ago has kind of converted me. And recording the last song, I got away with it, but I realised I NEEDED a fretted version as well.

Been playing it solo for a few days. Today I started rehearsing a bass part on a half-finished recording - WOW! Doesn't matter what patch I use on the ole POD thing... it sounds fabulous and just sits right in the song...
