Which bridge pickup for Tele?
« on: October 19, 2014, 02:21:00 PM »
Hi guys
I hope someone can help me decide!

I want to change the stock bridge pickup in my Tele. I need something with a wide tonal range, but still keeps the clean 'Twang' and classic Tele 'middle position' sound.

I play in a covers band, so need something that can cover all the bases.

We don't play metal, so the 'Piledriver' might not be for me.

I'm leaning towards the 'Brown Sugar' or maybe the 'Boss' or 'Yardbird' but I would be super grateful if someone can point me in the right direction.

(This is my first post to the forum)

Thanks

Black Guard 52 set. Bridge can rock if wanted and the neckpickup has a nice stratvibe. The chimey inbetween position is great for rhythm and fingerpicking.

I have The Boss set, the bridge one is great! More output and grunt but still retains the character of the Tele. Thought about Piledriver too but would have driven the amp too hard I think. Happy with this set.

Thanks for the quick replies guys!

I hadn't even considered the Blackguard sets as I assumed the output of the Vintage Hot sets would be higher. After looking again at the specs, it looks like the flat 50 and 52 are both high output at the bridge too....

Hmmm, I'm even more confused now! Too many choices haha...

I used to have a tele with a set of yardbirds . Although it wasn't my main guitar it was pretty versatile and could cover  most ground except of course metal. The yardbird bridge drives up really well.

Yes, they are. And you get another vote for the BGF52 set (the neck is great too) here, it's just what you described - only better <g>. Add a 4-way switch and you get the most versatile Tele you can expect while still keeping all of the classic TeleGoodness(tm).

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Just to add to the choices, don't disregard the Country Boy set and don't let the name put you off. If you want good traditional Tele tones, check them out. They can crank it out when required but have tone by the spadeful. A 4 way switch is also a great idea. My Tele thus equipped has become my main gigging guitar by stealth-purely on the basis of tone and the ground covered. And I am no country player I can assure you (not that there is anything wrong in that, you understand, I just mean that the name shouldn't type cast them).
