DOes the Blackhawk hit the front end of an amp hard enough?
« on: October 28, 2014, 08:13:24 PM »
I really want to try one with my own setup but it's a big chunk of cash for such an unknown!

I tried one once with a JCM900 and it was a bit wimpy and raspy but that is how I would describe a JCM900 other than the SLX

It's a toss up between this and the aftermath. I know from past experience that the AM doesn't quite hit the amp as hard as I like but it's close. Is the BH significantly less?

I know JImmymoorby had good results but he uses a lot more gain than I do so that would mess with the results somewhat as I usually run my amp with the gain around 2-3 to maintain the clarity.

The MM was a bit better for me. Tough decisions!

I've almost been through the checkout for these two 5 or 6 times now.

I might be able to help you out a bit. A while ago, I got a MM7 for my BC Rich. When I installed it and played with it, it didn't seem like it was pushing my amp as hard as my other, lower output pickups. I took it to a tech, asked the forum, etc. Everything was wired cleanly and the general consensus was that BKPs just seem to be lower output because of less compression. I feel like you've probably been around the forum enough to have heard that before (but on the off chance you haven't, there it is). The flip side to that is that I installed a PK into my Les Paul and it screams hotter than any other pickup I've played. From what I've read, the Black Hawk's output is pretty comparable to the MM and the PK or possibly hotter (they do say it has the power of an active). I'd say if you have a MM and like the way that feels, then the Black Hawk is definitely worth a shot. I'd think it's pretty safe to say you'd like it. And, if not, BKP does have that nice return policy.

I was just Googling this topic, and found this old thread.
Curious to know how hard the Black Hawks hit the front end of an amp.
I'm thinking about trying an A-Hawk bridge (or maybe an Impulse) in an SG style guitar.
I'm mostly familiar with A-Pigs. I also like how the 498T hits my amp. Do they feel anything like that?
