An introduction to AC/DC
« on: December 20, 2014, 09:01:20 AM »
Thanks for your suggestions on which CD would be the best introduced to Iron Maiden - I have now asked for a copy of "Live After Death" from my kids for Christmas and look forward to giving it a play. On a similar theme, I've never really got into AC/DC and wonder if I'm missing out on something, so could you please recommend a  CD as  a good starting point.

Cheers
Andy.

Oh, that's REALLY difficult!

I've been listening a lot to AC/DC recently (I love the new album).

My gut feeling is to suggest Back In Black and go forwards or backwards from there.

Another suggestion (if you like live albums) is get If You Want Blood with Bon Scott AND Live with Brian Johnson - you'll soon get a feel for which direction you want to jump.

Personally I love ALL the Bon Scott period. Although I bought Back in Black when it came out, I've only got into post-Bon AC/DC in the last few years - I listened to For Those About To Rock in the shop the day it came out and decided I didn't like the direction they were going in. Never bought another until...

I bought Black Ice when it came out, liked it, and I decided to get all the Brian Johnson albums and give em a good go... Depending on what you're after, some will be hit and miss, some won't. And for the one or two albums that leave you cold, you'll find they're someone else's favourites! (Btw, I really like For Those About To Rock now)

One thing, though - they all rock. For all they got lumped in with metal/etc, I personally think they are the most business-like and generally effective rock and roll band ever - they always do what it says on the tin.

Powerage
If You Want Blood
Highway to Hell
Back in Black

I would start with the latter two - the last of Bon and the first of Brian.  They were getting bigger and bigger, then Bon died and rather than falling apart they came back with their biggest and (possibly) best album ever.

But Powerage is my personal favourite.  It's all killer, no filler.

The Iron man 2 soundtrack is a pretty good introduction, it has stuff from Bon Scott's time, right up to Black Ice.  It's amazing how comfortably it all sits together actually!  Despite the jokes about them making the same album over and over again, there is some variety in their back catalogue.  Some variety...

I gotta agree with some of the comments above: Start with Back in Black & go from there!  It was my first 'DC and still probably my fave. All killer! ..  And I hope you like the Maiden too. I remember getting Live After Death (again,  my first) for Xmas (on double vinyl)  when it came out and blasting it out at my gran's house to lots of bemused drunken looks from the family!
Play it like you stole it!

Another vote for the Iron Man 2 soundtrack.

Powerage, Highway to Hell and High Voltage (international release) are my recommendations. I do like most of their stuff across both eras but with a bias towards the Bon Scott side.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Powerage and Highway to Hell are the best Bon albums IMO. Back in Black however is an utter classic in every dept.

Get all three.

I might jump in on these as the only AC/DC i';ve heard is the tracks Highway to Hell & Back in Black and I wasn't impressed by either but it could be worth investigating further.

I doubt you will be able to listen to Powerage all the way through.

Because I know Tony's tastes and think he will find it too mid-tempo, too simple, and too ... AC/DC lol.
