Schecter KM 6 BKP recommendation
« on: February 08, 2015, 04:59:55 PM »
Hi everyone,

Longtime forum reader, but first time poster.  Hoping to get some useful info and advice.  I recently purchased a Schecter KM 6 Keith Merrow signature (swamp ash body, set maple neck, maple top, and ebony board)... Looks and plays wonderfully.  However, I'm not a big fan of the Duncan Black Winter pickups.  Good pickups, but they're a little too bright/harsh for me.  I currently have a set of Aftermaths in it, but I've never been 100% happy with them.  Super tight, but again pretty bright and a little sterile sounding.

I'm waiting on an email from Mr. Mills about his suggestion, but I was wondering if anyone had some thoughts on a recommendation.  I'm going for a well-balanced, tight metal tone that is organic, not too bright, but still cuts through the mix.  I also love that chewy Alice in Chains Facelift tone, and the purry palm muted tone of Nolly fame.  I've been recommended Juggernauts, but I don't if they'd be too bright? (I honestly don't know.... I'm a novice at this stuff haha).  According to BKPs site, Holy Divers would be good for a bright guitar.  Alnico Nailbomb?  Blackhawks?

Please help.  I play hard rock, metal, and prog through an Axe Fx.  I would appreciate any info or recommendations.  Thanks!

Kiichi

Well, welcome to the posting people portion mate!

Depending on your focus the Jugg, the Nailbomb, and the HD could do good work.

The Jugg I hear has a rounded top end in a musical way. It was born from the idea of crossing the AM with the BH, to create something tight yet organic that plays well with modern high gain amps which tend to have a really present and often overly agressive top end. The overall character is modern though, which can be good or not.

The Nailbomb I would say should be Alnico for you actually, which delivers a really freaking agressive 90s style metal sound, but is also suprisingly versatile beyond that. Nailbom and Sepultura obviously spring to mind. Really 90s sound which can stretch to mordern and old school.

The Holydiver is a really hotrodded 80s metal thing. Crank the amp and this thing comes to live. It has the most organicly vintage roar of the three. The high end is really nicely musically rounded yet present making it work brilliantly in brighter guitars like yours. Cleans are great here too. This one rules 80s sounds, but can easily keep up with modern voices while bringing old school character to the table.

All three should work with your axe with the Nailbomb being the most agressive and bright one, the Jugg being modern, and the HD being the most old school and versatile.
