Fender American deluxe tele hh maple on alder crawlers or ?
« on: February 10, 2015, 07:48:15 PM »
having put bks into my tele (flat 50s) and les paul std (vh2) I now want to upgrade my 2008 all purpose Fender American deluxe tele hh wit maple on alder body, ebony board.  Play in a rock band doing the normal array of covers from chillis to muse via punk, 80s spandex, 90s foos etc.  like the crawlers but don't know if I should go for something a little less hot, say rebel yells.  Also want to use a coil tap.  Any thoughts, experiences  and suggestions great fully received

Hi and welcome.

The Crawlers seem like a good choice to me. They perform best in bright guitar, as yours sounds like from the woods, and covers a wide range of styles. Since it has a warm, uniquely growly midrange and a present but musically rounded high end it plays very well with strats and such. It is in the contemporary section, but the effective output is more similar to the vintage hot range most people agree. It is perhaps the most compressed of the BKPs, though that is a bit like the least famous Beatle to a certain extend. A partial result of this though is that coil splits are another forte of this one, being perhaps the best ones in the range. Tele like character and actually sound like proper single coils.

I am a big fan of the Rebel Yell, but they are best in Les Pauls, which is really the oposite of what you have. They are on the bright side and bring dark woods to live. Not a save bet in this situation.

The only other option I would suggest is the Holydiver. It is a hotrodded PAF design that kind of picks things up where the Crawler leaves them in some ways. It is a bit brighter all in all, but still full and organic, performing well in bright guitars like superstrats. The added brightness can make it go to higher gain levels than the Crawler, which is great for cleans, rock, hardrock, and classic heavy metal. The HD starts more at hardrock and goes on to modern prog metal.

For the guitar you have, the range of styles you want, and the wiring options you strive for these would be my recommendation.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

You'll love the Crawler in that guitar. They split very well too. And Crawlers are mediumhot, in my ears not much hotter than my VHII.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Crawler would be my first choice for this guitar, Holydiver the second.

Cheers Stephan

Crawlers are incredible in the bridge, though I wasn't as keen on the neck. They offer the best split tones I've ever come across too. For an all-round pickup that is great at everything, the Crawler is my favourite BKP offering and I'd certainly have another one.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite
