How are you finding the middle position to work? I have never really liked that with two humbuckers outside of Petrucci wiring and stuff till I got the 10ths. Wondering if this a vintage pickup thing now, so if the Stormys also work amazingly together that would solidify that idea.
It's
possibly a "vintage" pickup thing? I've always used the middle position. I have Mules, Riff Raffs, and Stormy Mondays. I've used various no-names pickups, the 57 Classics, etc, etc. For a little while I had the stock Gibson ceramics in my Explorer (500T and its mate) - that's the hottest humbucker I've ever used.
I came to twin humbuckers from strats. With strats I always used to set my live sound from the middle pickup and take it from there - my stock rhythm/crunch tone was strat middle, guitar volume on about 8, tone on about 6/7.
When I moved to twin humbuckers it just seemed obvious to sit in the middle position and adjust volumes/tones for flavour as I was playing. Then when I wanted to rock, just flip over to the bridge. So I'd set the two tones to about 6/7, bridge volume to about 6, neck volume to about 5, and then set the amp for rhythm/crunch. It just happened naturally after that!
If you have the bridge louder than the neck, at some point you get this more "hollow" sweet sort of sound. At gigs I used to fiddle around in the soundcheck to find it.
And then you've got the two tones to play with as well. (Actually, when I tried 50s wiring, I gave up on it pretty quickly, because it makes the vol/tones too interactive for me, and I lost all the control I'd learnt!)
