HSP90 Stockholm Bridge/Neck compliment
« on: February 11, 2015, 03:26:45 PM »
The more and more I listen to clips, the more I think I'm going to throw a Stockholm HSP90 in the bridge of my LP custom.

With that said, I'm looking to see what a good/versitile neck pickup would be. I realize most people will advocate a matched set, however I'm not sure I need that much output in the neck.

I'd like to be able to hit that pink floyd another brick/sweet child o mine type tone in the neck if possible, and have it keep its character when clean without getting too dirty.

That said, I'd like it to match up well in terms of loudness when switching between pickups and deliver some great character matched up with the stockholm in the middle selector position.

I would recommend having a look at the Cold Sweat neck. It's a fantastic all rounder and offers a smooth, full, rich and fluent tone making it great for solo work! It also wont give you a massive volume difference when switching between positions - http://bit.ly/BKP-ColdSweat

Thanks for the reply Chris,

I was thinking more along the lines of another P90 in the neck. Oftend youll see p90 neck and hum bridge but I can't say I often see it other other way around.

No problem Aaron. There is no real reason why you can't have it the other way around especially when the Stockholm is a much higher output pickup.

If you're sure you want another HSP90 in the neck and not the Stockholm neck, then the best match from your description would be the Mississippi Queen neck - http://bit.ly/MississippiQ. However the Cold Sweat would definitely offer more versatility and works well in LP's.

Yeah, unsurprisingly Chris has good advice. To add my 2 cents I can definetly see why you want a P90 neck to go with it. Do that myself. For that then Iīd also say the MQ is the best bet. It has a classic character and is just the gold standard P90 tone. You can make it scream and sing. Roll down the tone a tad and you are in the GNR and Gilmour area. Cleans are lovely too. While the Stockholm has a distinctly modern character and the MQ a classic one they match in volume suprisingly well, with the SH being more compressed obviously. The middle should be properly nice too. If you add a series/parallel push pull to that you can get a great super humbucker sound there too. Comes recommended!

I got my SH bridge matched up with the Supermassive neck, which is closely related to the SH but is less hot, and has less bass. Brilliant neck PU and great pairing, but too modern for you.

How does the series/parallel thing work? I've never even heard of the 'super humbucker'

I'm seriously going to consider the Coldsweat neck which I would probably consider a pull coil split on.

Thing is really simple actually. In a humbucker the two coils are wired in series. On a typical strat, or a dual P90 guitar, the middle positions where two single coil pickups are active are wired in parallel. Now in the case of the dual P90 guitar, if you have a switch to change the middle from the classic parallel to series you are wiring the two coils together like a humbucker would be. Thing is those two coils are much fatter, with stronger magnets. I mean they each can keep up with a humbucker, but now the two together function as one. Thatīs why I call it a super humbucker.

On my Stockholm bridge, Supermassive neck LP that is one of my absolute favorite positions. Balsier and more a tad more humbucker like rounded than the bridge solo, so amazing for riffing, and for solos it is also great and agressive. Itīs more of an alternative bridge tone, where as the classic wiring is more of an alternative neck tone.

Hope that is understandable. Wiring is initially a bit hard to grasp, I know, but in essence it is astonishingly simple I think.

Canīt comment on the CS neck idea though, gotta leave that to Chris and others.
