Best Rhythm Pickup?
« on: March 15, 2015, 08:31:34 AM »
I was wondering what people consider to be the best rhythm pickup? From reading through posts it would appear to be possibly either a Juggernaut or a Nail Bomb but is it just a straight fight between these two or are there any more contenders?

Nailbomb is a good pickup but I would have expected the Miracle Man to be a contender.

I use the Stockholm P-90 as a rhythm pickup and have no complaints.
BLACK HAWKS
IMPULSES
COBRA-T
WAR PIGS
STOCKHOLM
COLD SWEATS
MIRACLE MAN
TRUE GRIT

Depends what guitar you have, style you play and amp you use.

I've got an Alnico and a Ceramic Nailbomb in each of my Les Paul's (one main one backup) and I love them. They are very rich, organic and bark! But, the one thing I love about them is the clarity, esp under high gain. Also I'm primarily a rhythm player so its suits me down to the ground.

Haven't tried many of the others only the Aftermath and that was good just too middy and washy for me.

I've got an Alnico Nailbomb in one of my other guitars and it's pretty much the perfect guitar / pickup combination for most of what I do. I'm basically stuck between buying another A-bomb for this guitar (Fender Showmaster Super-Strat) or something else for a bit of variety. I currently have a VHii set in there (I thought I'd give them a go as they are generally thought of as a variation on the Nailbomb theme) but I find the bridge slightly underpowered and a bit too loose at the bottom end resulting in it sounding a little too scooped.

I don't know enough about the other pickups in the humbucker range to comment properly only the ones I've tried personally. but if you're wanting a tighter bottom end then any of the contemporary humbuckers should be good, maybe the Cold Sweat?

I had thought about the Cold Sweat - the clips sound pretty good, my only concern is whether its top end is going to be too much in a basswood super-strat. I'd also thought about the Rebel Yell but I think that will have too much in the hi-mids for this guitar.

I'm just guessing really, but I'm really happy with the Nailbomb's in my Les Pauls'!

Wish there was a way to be able to try pickups in before buying, cos the only way you'll know is by getting a set to put in your guitar!
