How variable are aged nickel covers?

The photos seem to vary from "buried in the garden for 20yrs"



to "nicely played in"



I really wouldn't fancy the the pickup in the top pic but the bottom one looks cool, do they really vary that much?

FWIW, raw nickel ages pretty fast (and well as far as I'm concerned but YMMV).

True, I have a pair of Tom Holmes raw nickel humbuckers and they look a lot older than they are.

True, and far as I know brushed nickel even a knick faster. They also look gorgeous imho, my favorite cover. Got 3 pickups with those. Only they havenīt really aged yet since I play so many different guitars that each single one does not see that much use.

get the raw nickel option without any aging
just a couple months of playing will provide that effect naturally

Yeah I think raw nickel is probably my best bet, I don't really fancy the grunged up adjustable pole pieces even on the lightly aged version!

Do the brushed covers just look matt or is the 'brushing' quite obvious?

They do really look like that when you take a look up close. From further away they have a lovely matte shine. Not easily affected by dirt and finger greasy like any polished cover. Yet they remain silvery nickel shiny. Super classy I think, and they do age with such dignity.

Sounds cool! I always think covered humbuckers look better than open coils.
