ive not had much bother from chavs (or neds, as we call them round these parts.) last time a group gave me some bother i just smacked the leader, the biggest one there actually, and every one of the lil bar-stewards legged it. maybe that and im a big person myself, 6'4 and pretty well built...

plus carrying a small knife in my bag in with a load of tools helps a little.

oh and if you want something to help you out around a town i reccomend adding some choice key rings... yep thats a padlock and one of those 'scoobie' things my cousin made me. voila, a home made mace...

I think Rob's warning is to be taken seriously. A good mate of mine did time in prison because he went to the aid of someone who was being beaten up by two "men". He took both on and beat them off her- she legged it, the police turned up and arrested him because the two men swore blind he'd attacked them without provocation. He was very very bitter towards the system thereafter and to this day can be a very moody guy. Best thing is to try to avoid confrontation and violence but if it is thrust upon you then learning self defence is worthwhile. It is a mixed up world but like I said earloier, most people are good decent people- there is always an undercurrent of rubbish that should be removed from society.

I only ever really got stick from chavs when i was in school. They were a bunch of idiots then, now they're a bunch of drug addicted/dealing idiots. Makes me laugh how they turned out when they thought they were 'it' and were better than every one else. I've turned out better than they have and i'm not even any where near the goal i've set for myself. I do sometimes get lip from pikeys and chavs at the shopping mall i visit now and then, but it's mostly little kids with there older friends who mouth off. But you can't hit them because they're younger, even though they really deserve a good whollop to the face to learn to treat people with respect.

A funny story. I was about 11 years old and i'd found a bike lying in some bushes behind a shopping mall, so i decided to take it to the police station. I decided to just ride it there because it was quite a walk. I got stopped by some much older guy who claimed i stole his bike and demanded money for the repairs. I refused because i told him what had happened, so he hit me round the head. Broke my nose, bumps and bruises and he ran off with his mates.

Turns out my cousin was mates with him. This blokes mates found out i was only 11 so he became a laughing stock and a mate of my cousins' beat the cr@p out of him. Took him to court, got some compensation and he done community service. I haven't really seen him since, but if he ever started again, i wouldn't hesitate to react strongly. He gets into trouble all the time with mugging his mum and drugs. What a tosser

Maybe this could be a good lesson learned, don't talk to, or approach strangers on the road at night. You could have been stabbed to death quite easily, and in the middle of night, there's plenty of nutters around who won't think twice about doing it.

True, true, but I'm not going to get all paranoid. Yeah, that could have happened for sure, but at the same time it's not super likely. Given that I was with two of my mates and it was in a nice neighbourhood, I wasn't really expecting that. I know when to keep my head down, but this was well out of the blue.

Mark, a chav is like a scally, you know, all adidas tracksuits, baseball caps, over the top jewellrey and generally not the nicest people. I think to a certain extent they have become demonized over the last few years, to the point now where some of them are acting in an according manner now - self fulfilling prophecy and all that. This guy wasn't a chav though, just some guy in a leather jacket.

Incidentally, you got thrown from a moving train? I don't mean to poke fun but I've just got this image of an old Wild West style train rolling through the outback, it's all gone a bit Hollywood movie for me! Must have hurt though.

2 extra friends? 3 against one, he would have to be an extremely capable fighter to stand and actually contend with 3 young guys, I can't believe your mates didn't jump on him.

I know, but this guy was a bloody psycho, I think it intimidated my friends...none of us are fighters anyway and you've got this built 6 foot 4 guy grabbing me by the throat against a wall and wanting to know if we've got any weapons...you know, it was probably quite intimidating.

Besides, at the end of the day, we sorted it without violence so I don't see any point in moaning about it.

No problem, but such things can throw you off your normal way of going at times, sometimes you have to speak about it to get a normal perspective upon the event.

Oh I know, I completely understand. My point was that it could have worked out a lot worse than it did; but it didn't so I feel quite happy and glad for that. - I'm not going to let this whole episode get me down.

I know it might not necessarily be a popular view, but I'm still opposed to 3 guys jumping one guy before any punches were thrown - and I'm glad we didn't. If we had of kicked off, then surely we all would have copped at least one punch each.

However, yeah, lessons have been learned...I think I'll get back into learning some self defence again. I used to be good at judo back in the day but that was a long time ago. I always wanted to learn krav maga but no-one round here teaches that, so I'll check out some akido that you recommended. There's also a Gung Fu class round the corner, probably worth checking out.

If you can find a Tong Long class or private instructor near you, go for that.  It's possibly the most effective martial art form available to the general public.  I shared a house with an instructor for a little while and this stuff is effective.  A friend we knew who also did it got jumped by three guys with baseball bats while out walking with his wife and he put them all in hospital without him or his wife being hit once.

ooh, gotten onto Martial Arts now :)

Well, I hold belts in Lau Gar Kung Fu, Taekwondo, Wing Chun and Aikido.

The most useful, IMO, is Aikido.

I usually advocate flight before fight, but Aikido is good for close quarters and uses the opponents strength against them. I think it's a great art to learn.

Maybe we need to start our own thread.  ;)

The problem I have with Aikido is that it's more of a reactive style.  I prefer one that lets me hit first.  To be honest, I haven't ever studied Aikido in any depth, so slap me around if I'm way off base.

I've done Tae Kwon Do (useless, IMO), Tong Long, Hapkido, Jeet Kune Do, and briefly looked into Jiu Jitsu, Wing Chun, Ninjitsu, Muay Thai, and Shaolin Chin Na.
