Nantuckets!
« on: May 07, 2015, 11:24:00 AM »
I don't hear much about these on the forum. I was wondering what people thought of the results of putting a humbucker sized Nantucket in their SG or Les Paul! (I have both and am wondering which to put it in first when it arrives!)

I know the samples on the website are from an SG - and it sounds perfect. I was wondering how it'd sound in the LP (or even an alder-bodied rosewood fretboard Fender Toronado I have.)

Thanks for all your advice and opinions.

I have had P90s in different types of guitar, and imho they sounded best in LP types. Donīt have an SG though. Thing is that compared to humbuckers the P90 type provides a deeper low with excellent definetion end an more open, higher high end (which can scream without gettin harsh as it stays natural), as they are single coils. Additionally the midrange opens up and breathes, getting a very special roar on top of it. What I found was that this character works well with LPs which tend to have a dense midrange and often less prominent high end compared to other guitars. Plus the scale length does not give the deepest low end. Since SGs are known to be midrange monsters I would recon the same applies for them.

P90s can also go into other types, like Teles, or Superstrats, but I found them to be a lot more picky there.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I have a set of Nantuckets in my 1972 LP 55 Special.  They are very good in that guitar and I'm sure they'll work out well in an SG.   I have older BK P-90's in other guitars too and like the sound of them in my PRS EG (BKP-91's) and LP Junior (Pig-90).  I'm just getting a set of Supermassives for my Wez V SG, as I want a bit more drive from it, but I had thought about putting Nantuckets in it for a while.  Overall the Nantuckets sound just like the P-90 in my 1960 LP Junior, which is one of my favourite pickup sounds - listen to Leslie West and you'll hear the sound.
