Alnico nailbombs and drop tunings?
« on: May 18, 2015, 01:41:58 AM »
So i have a set of alnico nailbombs which in my new guitar really just sound great, I had a tech mess with the height and he really hit a sweet spot, they sound amazing, I am in drop D flat right now... I started playing melo death metal with my band recently and to get that big sound alot of those bands seem to be in C standard... I definitely want to go back to standard as its easier to write with... but should i go to D standard or C standard? Is c standard too low? Ive tried drop B and hated it because the low string is too low and always makes me sound like im playing djent or metalcore cr@p... But i liked drop C when i tried it... just found the nailbomb sometimes got a little bit flubby when the strings were too old... if I decide to go into C standard I will probably use daddario 11-56 nyxls... I like a slinky top strings.

I have no problems with my A-Bomb in the following guitar:

Epiphone '58 Korina Explorer with TonePros bridge and tailpiece

550K pots and 0.022uf cap

tuned DGCFAD

Strings EB Skinny Top Heavy Bottom (10-52)

I did try tuning it to C# standard but those strings were a bit too light for that tuning.

I had it tuned to C# standard when it had Warpigs in it but that made it sound like a bass, probably because everything was too dark.

I hope this helps.

On what tuning is right for you I guess that depends on style of music.  D standard always reminds me of Hellkrusher, who use that tuning.

Melodic death metal, in flames and arch enemy use it... Do you think 11-56 strings would be a good idea for c standard? I like strings that are light.... like 9-42 for standard

I think that would probably be heavy enough in terms of the strings.

Sorry but I really have no experience of how the A-Bomb responds to strings in that gauge or tuning.  An Explorer has a 24.75" scale too; if you have a longer Fender type scale you will find that strings feel heavier.  10-52 would probably be fine for C# standard on say a Jackson or any other guitar with a 25.5" scale

I have both an alnico and a ceramic Nailbomb in each of my Les Pauls. The alnico one is in an Epiphone Les Paul Standard, mostly used in Standard tuning/drop D, drop C# and also Drop c (acts as backup to my main band guitar). I use 10-52's on this and its pretty solid in the tunings.

The ceramic nailbomb is in my main guitar (LP studio) and is in drop c tuning with EB 12-56's.

Its a great pickup though I am keeping an eye open for what else could go in the guitars, but for now its good for me.

It depends on the guitar you have an amp, etc etc which also affect the tone.
