HSS set for Suhr Rasmus S100
« on: May 31, 2015, 12:00:47 PM »
Hey guys! A couple of weeks ago I received a Suhr Rasmus S100 in a trade. A truly magnificent guitar in every way except the sound/pickups... The Suhr MLs are so god damn bright it is even ice picky in the neck position! It gets better when I turn down the tone knob naturally, but then there is way too little treble when I change to the humbucker. I am considering to change the electronics as well because there is still sound from the guitar when the volume knob is turned all the way down. So, what values do you recommend there? The guitar has master volume and master tone pots, and sc pickups like 250k best and humbuckers like 500k...
When it comes to pickups, I want the guitar to be very versatile, with a vintage SRV/Frusciante sound from the singlecoils and a screaming heavy metal tone from the humbucker. The pickups I am considering are the Holydiver, Juggernaut, Irish Tour and Trilogy Suite.
In advance, thank you for your answer(s)!

Holy Diver and Juggernaut (more modern) seem to suit your timbers.
For the single coils I would Pat Pend Veneer Board 63 or Mother's Milk. Instant Frusciante/SRV.
If you want more bass, mids and less cut, but still vintage flavour and woodiness: Irish Tours (just an overwound version of the Mother's Milk).

Thank you! Well that is what I thought as well, but my worries are that the Irish Tours will be overpowered by the Holydiver and certainly the Juggernaut... That is why I mentioned the Trilogy Suites as well. It might be the pickups, but the guitar is naturally fairly bright as well. And as far as I know it is not possible to adjust the pickup height, because the pickups are screwed directly into the wood.
I should also mention that I have always used a Cold Sweat bridge in another superstrat (Mayones Setius in mahogany/maple), and I just love the ceramic surgical tightness! However, I recently bought a Rebel Yell for my Les Paul and there is no extreme difference in tightness actually, at least much less difference than I expected. However, tightness is a very important quality, and I think the Juggernaut is the only option (with a ceramic) due to the regular bright cut of a ceramic, which is not desirable in such a bright guitar.

I wouldn't be worried about the Irish Tours being overpowered by the Holydiver, they have plenty of oomph, cut, brightness, and crisp woodiness to them. I actually find that the IT I have in the neck of my strat overpowers my VH II bridge when you use gain. If the guitar is fairly bright like you mention, then the extra bass of the Irish tour will really complement it. I think they are one of BKPs best selling single coils for a reason. They nail the big powerhouse strat tones, and are excellent at cleans.

In terms of bridge, I think pairling a bright guitar with a Holydiver deliver great heavy metal sounds. It might not have as much power and tightness as a Juggernaut, but it would be the safe option for a tried and true set BKP HSS set (Holydiver+ITs).

I have a Crawler/Irish Tours-set in a swampashstrat. There's not a big volumedrop when switching to the singles.
The brightness of your guitar is more important for your choice. Maybe you should look at Slowhands (vintage, more mids, less treble) and indeed the more modern TS. The Trilogy is more direction P90 than a vintage true single coil, but that might be the right pickup for your guitar. It's not exactly SRV/Frusciante, but I don't know if you want exact that tone or just  a tad of that flavour. If you roll down the volumeknob the TS should clean up nice for a more vintage chime.

I think I will be going for the Slow Hands in the neck and middle! I am mainly a humbucker/mahogany guy and even though I really enjoy the single coil sparkle, it can easily get too much for my ears. When it comes to the humbucker I think I will go for the Holydiver, but I am not 100% certain. I will have to wait until next month to order anyway so I have plenty of time!
How do you guys wire your HSS-setups? All 500k or 250k?

Iīd rather do all 500k than all 250k. Best is if you can separate them though. There also is a way where you put resistors in series with the SCs somewhere I canīt recall so they effectivly run on 250k, which thus gives you best of both worlds.

Google for the Suhr-wiring diagram. I have 500k for the Crawler, 250k for the single coils. Mine is wired that I can split the Crawler, but also to combine the Crawler in humbuckermode with the middle-ITm which adds a toplayer of chime on the big Crawler-sound.

I see. Well, there are some resistors or caps in the electronics. It may be wired like the Suhrs, which is not totally impossible as the guitar is made by Suhr, at least to some extent... Then I would only need to replace the pots, should I use 500k as both tone and volume pot?

Volume 500k, tonepot 250k, if you stick to the Suhr-diagram.
