Replacing a Suhr Aldrich recommendation
« on: July 04, 2015, 05:44:52 PM »
I recently acquired a Suhr C2. This is a Strat body, all alder, maple neck and FB, bolt-on, with a Floyd Rose Trem. A bright guitar for sure. It is an HSS pickup config, with 2 JST ML single coils and an Aldrich HB. It uses the fantastic Suhr wiring scheme where the HB splits in position 2 and uses 250k or 500k pots depending on the configuration. Sounds awesome in all positions incredible quacky sounds in position 2 and 4, and I am floored how well the Aldrich HB splits and combines with the middle coil. The only issue is the Aldrich HB on it's own. The guitar lacks low end oomph. I know this is largely due to the components - this is not going to sound like a Les Paul! But if there was a way to swap out the pickup and get a but more low end without sacrificing the awesome sounds the Aldrich HB provides when split, I would try it. My understand is the Aldrich does better in set neck mahogany guitars, so perhaps this PU doesn't have a lot of low end, I can't tell from Suhr's specs.

I play mostly 80's metal, Zakk, etc. although I like most anything metal currently. I think I will dedicate this guitar to thinner sounds just due to the body, but if there is anyway I could thicken it up, I would try it out. I've read that Crawler would fit the bill. I also hear that Miracle Man can make a Strat sound like a LP and has a strong upper mid sound  like George Lynch, but I am afraid that this pickup may be too bright for this guitar. Any thoughts? I have a Warpig in my Les Paul that I love but this LP has a maple neck and ebony FB so it is much brighter than most LP's and I love the tight low end. I also have had a Nailbomb which was awesome and tight on the low end but was a little grainy for my taste. I love the tightness of both of these pickups but do not want to use them so I have a different sound. I also will be putting Rebel Yells in a PRS so these are out. Thanks for any insight!

One other thought, I am also considering the Seymour Duncan WARREN DEMARTINI RTM. This is an alnico II pickup that Warren puts in his guitars, and they are almost always bright super strat guitars like my Suhr. I fear it would be a little squishy on the bottom end and not have that tight characteristic BKP low end, but maybe I need something squishier in this guitar. Thanks!

MM is the Zakk tone. Super fat would be the Crawler.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

I think the Holy Diver and Miracle Man should be good fits. Both have the low end that should fill out the sound a bit more.

Just as a correction, the MM does not have a "strong upper mid" sound (and neither has George Lynch in my opinion), but more a strong treble end. It does work very well for that kind of sound.

I don't know the Crawler, others can hopefully advise on that.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I would suggest the Holydiver or Crawler. Your Suhr sound very similar to my Suhr Rasmus S100 «wood wise», the Rasmus has a rosewood fretboard but it is still a quite bright guitar. Actually I have not tried either myself, but that is what both BKP and the forum recommended, and I have a Crawler on the way. I will let you know how it sounds when I get it installed in the guitar!
BKs: Black Dog (b), Riff Raff (b), HSP90 Nantucket (b).

I haven't heard the MM, I was just quoting another thread that went into Lynch's rig and the sentiment seemed to be that he used ceramic pickups. It did sound odd to read that the MM has a strong upper mid as it looks to be more scooped on the tone chart. I agree with you that George had a strong high end.

Yes, please let me know. I read a lot of good stuff about the crawler and how it thickens up bright guitars. I just wonder if it ends up being too loose on the bottom end.

Yeah, I have heard quite some different descriptions of the Crawler as well. Some guy on a metal forum, I believe it was sevenstring, has been raving about this pickup. How suprisingly tight it is and that it actually sounds more aggressive than the Holydiver, which probably was the reason I chose it over the Holydiver. The fact that it does quite a convincing tele-sound when split is not a bad thing either!

^I agree - the Crawler's low end is much tighter than I was prepared to believe it would be based upon many of the reviews here.

Can you imagine, it's one of the softer BKP's. I agree, for what I do it's plenty tight.

Ha, I cant imagine I'd need anything tighter.

Although I really enjoy the surgical tightness of a ceramic from time to time, the alnico Vs are actually plenty tight for most stuff, at least what I play (which is pretty heavy stuff most of the time). The Rebell Yell is at least plenty tight, and I am not worried the Crawler will lack tightness!
