telecaster bridge pickup for fusion/jazz
« on: July 31, 2015, 01:51:46 PM »
Hey guys,

i'm looking for a bridge pickup upgrade for my warmoth telecaster.
i'm mainly using it to play fusion/modern jazz, but it'd like to do that kind of music with a modern/rockier sound that is usually associated with jazz.

the neck pickup is a suhr classic t pickup and the current bridge is a mexican telecaster pickup that i picked up used for nothing, but it's output level is really really low compared to the suhr level and it soudns dead and dull compared to the it.

this is the kind of sound i have in mind:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z_9BacSf5I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aupko4pNYUw clean bridge sound  in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Olq43KrsBEw

what i hear is really tight in the bass, not so much highs too, the bridge seems to be mainly mids/high mids, very articulate and dynamic, lots of overtones. i'd also be interested to know what pickups are the closest to the beautiful tone of the neck pickup at the end of this video (2:50 to 3:05), with the HUGE harmonic range ot the pickup, deep bass, bell like highs, some mids. i also think i'd like more of a 'strat' throathy type of tone i LOVE that when i listen to the sound of the strat pickups on the bkp pickup presentation.

any suggestion ? :)

Sounds quite modern for a tele. From what I hear in the vids a Boss-set might do fine here.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

thanks for your suggestion!

very modern tele sound it's what i was thinking too.
the options i had in mind were the flat 52, the boss or piledriver.

But the boss description says they have compressed dynamic. isn't that the opposite of what one can hear in the video? with a lot of dynamics?
in fact i was mainly considering other pickups because of that 'compression' feature

I would say a tad more compressed compared to the vintage BKP's telepickups. But every BKP has a lot of dynamics, excellent noteseparation and articulation. The Piledriver has more compression and is often used for heavier styles, even metal. Personally I like the Blackguards. The BG50 might do for you too. It's got more balls than the BG52 and a little less topend, but still the authentic early fifties tele-palet.

Hello everybody

just a quick message to let you all know that i finally bought a the boss bridge and installed it in my tele.

i'm super happy with it.
Let's begin by saying that i'm normally NOT a bridge player at all. i hate most bridge pickups, i find them too thin, trebly, and the notes don't bloom. except of course if it's for a dirt part, or with overdrive, where these features are actually helping controlling the distortion sound.

Well, now that i have this pickup in my tele, i actually PREFER playing with the bridge to the neck. the grain and texture of the sound are absolutely stunning. i've never hear that before. it's so precise and rich it's ridiculous. Yet it doesn't have too much treble and no icepick and the notes are alive and resonate well.

It's absolutely not bass oriented (my only minor drawback at the pickups) in fact, it cust so much bass that io think my E string is loosing some frequencies on the lowers 3-4 frets.  but it's part of that 'modern tele' sound i was looking for so .. cool.

My neck pickup is a suhr pickup that, before i installed the the boss bridge, found super precise and absolutely great. now i find i hard to use it because everytime i go back to it, the sound looses all its precision and texture.
it's not a question of frequency it's as if it was coming from the amp, under some very thick layers of fabric.

So i'm considering upgrading the neck pickup too... not sure if it should be a the boss or a blackguard 50 or 52. i'd love to have a stratish quality to it. or maybe try benedetti pickups (i've tried a luthier guitar with benedettis on it and it was incredible..)

Anyway, i have not tried the other bare knuckle bridge tele pickups, but i LOVE the boss ones i bought.
a definite upgrade to the stock fender i had before..

That is so nice to hear, congrats. The boss is very likely the set I will get myself once I buy a tele, which is only a matter of time. Got to have that Born to Run vibe for me. =)

And yes, definetly upgrade the neck Iīd say. Canīt comment much on with what though.

Congrats, I knew the Boss would work for you instead of the other way around! Glad it ticks your box.
