Gibson SG 70s Tribute
« on: August 13, 2015, 01:47:44 PM »
I've been thinking abou picking one of these up as guitar guitar in Epsom has them for Ģ499. Anybody have any experience with the cheaper gibsons? Anything I should look out for on them?

If you are talking about the 2013s these are a very nice guitar, have not heard a bad word about them.

Definitely 100% better than the 2014 and 2015 models.  If you have the cash I'd snap it up.  The neck on these feels very nice in the hands (to me anyway) and the Dirty Fingers are nice pickups too.

If they have a few of them just check that you get the one with the nicest frets.  There can be some variation.

Also I have read reports that some have PCBs while others are wired.  You might want to look under the cavity cover.

Seriously though they are all pretty good and it might be the case that the only one they have left needs a fret dress and has a PCB but I think likely to still be worth grabbing.  They won't make a new Gibson as nice as that any time soon.

There were two out on display. One had s much darker neck than the other which I preferred so I took it to a booth and had a okay for half an hour through an Orange TH30 combo similar to my home setup.
I was expecting it to be much more rough around the edges with a more epiphone like feel to it but I was actually extremely impressed with the finish and the setup. No sharp fret edges, no buzzy frets. The g string was a bit pingy at the nut but nothing that was worth a frown. So.... I decided to buy it. They have an instore luthier too so while I was waiting for the assistant to fetch the gig bag he gave the nut a quick file and that problem was sorted.

Had it home for about an hour now and I'm really chuffed with it. The pickups sound great although I'd prefer them to have metal covers on. That's a project for when I fancy a change perhaps as these are great for now. Out of interest do you know what pups in the Bkp range are in the dirty fingers ballpark as its great to have a frame of reference for future swaps.

Congrats on the buy! Sounds like quite a fine axe. But we need pics. You know that, donīt you.

On the pickups I can never recall. I just know that if I ever get an SG I will go P90 in there. Probably MQs. Oh the glory...

People say that the Cold Sweat set is the closest but I have also been told that the DFs have more output.  It might be the case that a MM/CS combo would work best.  I'm thinking of moving to that in my SG Standard for heavier, thrashier sounds.

Personally I would probably stick with the Dirty Fingers.  They are good pickups.  Glad to hear that you are happy with it!

Looks nice, glad you like it :)

The Cold sweat was inspired by John Sykes guitar sound, and he used original Dirty Fingers in his Les Paul Custom.  Whether or not that makes the Cold Sweat actually sound like a Dirty Fingers is open to debate!

If I were to replace the pickups on one of these I would probably go for the A-Pig with a Jugg neck.  It would sound different from the Dirty Fingers but would suit the guitar very well and still give a '70s vibe despite the output jump.

Nice buy. I've said many times that I used to dislike the look of SG's but that changed some while ago and I absolutely love them. I love the workman like vibe and whenever I've played one, I've loved the neck. it will be interesting to see what you decide regarding the pickups.
