Clean boost in fx loop (but where in the chain)
« on: August 23, 2015, 12:51:15 PM »
Hey Guys,

This might seem like a bit of a noob question but if I don't ask I won't know. I tend to keep things on my pedal board as simple as possible. I'm only using 4 pedals
My wah is going through the front like it should (duh)
But the rest: boost, mod, delay are going through the loop. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on pedal order. Right now they're in the order listed, but I'm finding that during rehearsals the solos that I play with the mod seem louder than those without. Shoudl i reverse the order of the boost and the mod? Put the boost at the end of the mini chain?
Any advice would help.
Thanks

That's matter of trying and also preference. Clean boost in the loop provides a volumejump. In front of the amp it drives your preamp harder and also the other pedals after the clean boost. Delay sounds/blends most of the time best in the loop as do nearly all time-effects like chorus, phaser, flange.

I have my boost placed last in the signal chain of my effects loop.  As stated above it acts there as a volume boost

You could also try the mod in front of the amp and see if you're getting the boost there, if putting the boost at the end of the chain in the loop doesn't work. I probably prefer delay and reverb in the loop if I'm using amp distortion (though some people like it in front), but modulation is about 50:50, you can make a case either way. It tends to sound a bit subtler up-front, so it depends on what you want.

This is one of those things you'll just have to try for your self.
Different amps, fx loops, orders and pedals will react differently.

Why do you want a boost in the loop any way?  Just for a volume boost or to alter the tone as well?

You'll need to experiment on your own but i'd consider getting a modulation pedal with boosting functions built into it.

After 15 years of playing for now i've made the decision create a rig without any boost pedals/overdrives at all but that's just me....can;t be doing with the extra noise and problems etc but each to their own.

I know that most overdrives are quite noisy and probably some boosts too but my MXR/CAE Boost/Linedriver seems to be very clean sounding.  I run it at the end of my loop on 18V.  I will admit that I don't use it much but when I do it doesn't colour the tone or introduce noise.  It just bumps the volume up by however decibels I select on the one knob it has.

It has other uses too (e.g., in the front end either as a boost or a linedriver) but it doesn't seem to add noise.  Which is more than I can say for my MXR compressors and EQs.

I use a TS9 in front of my 6505+ head and it can pretty noisy! Thankfully I have an ISP decimator and back off the pre-amp gain on the amp to about 3.5/4. I would love to just have a main rhythm sound which is the lead channel then my clean sound, footswitchable, but I find the tubescreamer really tightens up the flubbiness of the lead channel and gives it a bit more bite.

thanks for all the replies. I think I must have worded things a bit awkwardly. The boost is used to bring a bit more volume to my solos without altering the tone. MXR Micro Amp. Right now it's in front of my flanger which I use in a couple of solos but when I kick the flanger on it seems almost too boosted. I'll give a try next rehearsal with the boost after. See what happens.

What you said made sense to me.
All I was suggesting is you consider looking at modulation pedals with boost/volume functions already built into them

I have a CAE line driver/ boost which is pretty much a Micro amp and I put it last inline in the loop, works a treat for a hike in lead break volume.

That's exactly the setup I have.  I run mine on 18V.
