New Apaches Day! (Help required)
« on: November 09, 2015, 09:53:15 PM »
Hi all! New here & new to Bare Knuckle Pickups...

I just bought a set of Apaches to try on my strat custom shop with original John Cruz Ltd. pickups (haven't tried them yet).
They came with base plates (the 3 of them), and are 5,8K - 5,8K and 6,4K (bridge). I saw at the site that now they come with 5,6K in both neck and middle pickup.

First question: What's the difference sound wise between the old 5,8K apaches and the new 5,6K?

Second question: how many turns of wire should i unwound to bring the neck and middle pickups to 5,6K if I decide to do so? What precautions should I take to perform an unwound?

Third question: Is there anything I should know to remove the base plates? What will be the difference sound wise with and without base plates.

If Tim can give me some advice regarding any of this question it'll be most appreciated.

That's for now.

Thanks a bunch, and I wish you the awesomest best.

Nico.

Hey Nico, welcome here.

You've got great pickups, yet baseplates on the middle- en the neckpickup is rare. They can sound easily boomy that way. A baseplate on the bridge is common, to provide a little more beef and bass.
The dc-resistance can vary on scatterwound pickups. I bet you can't hear much to no difference between 5,6 and 5,8k.

I would throw a mail at the BKP-team about removing the baseplates. I would not unwound the pickups yourself, unless you know exactly what you're doing.

Thanks for your reply! I sent them an email.

Any advice on the "all three baseplate" option will be much appreciated! Has anyone tried them before with the baseplates installed?

I can only say it makes the neckpickup easily boomy. I have no baseplates on the middles and the necks of my Mother's Milk and Irish Tour. They sound balanced.

Since the apaches seem to have less bass (see graphic in BKP site) maybe a baseplate will balance them... right? I already installed them and I quite like the sound I'm getting now. Think the gilmour #0001 strat... I have that. Think Hank Marvin, I have that. '54 strat all the way. ;) It is not loose nor boomy, actually is kind of tight in the low registry with lots of sparkle in the high registry.

Echoes like stuff is out of my league right now though...

When they're fine for you, leave it that way and just have fun.

Yup, this.
I have always considered getting a full baseplate set for a start. Since I am a student still that has not yet happened though. My two dreams strats still are a John Mayer type with a Pat pend set, baseplate bridge, and a SH bridge, IT mid and neck, all baseplate, set on a Jimmy Vaughn strat.
The dream. =)

It just sounds so reasonable.
