Hello all - newbie here
« on: January 13, 2016, 07:14:26 PM »
I have an old PRS Custom 24 that I've been messing with lately.  It's quite a bright guitar, so I'm trying to warm it up.  I'm thinking about Juggernaughts or A-Bombs.  I know I don't want ceramic magnets.  I'm considering the Jug based on its warmer low-end.  I really like the tone of A-bombs, I'm just not sure they're going to solve my problem.  Any advice would definitely be appreciated - Thanks!

First thing I got to ask is what kind of style you are going for. That can change things a lot. Right of the bat my mind goes to the Juggernaut, Warpig, Holydiver, and Crawler. Judging by you liking the Abomb sound I recon you are going towards metal. The Abomb, known for a certain hairy note, might not be the best for you considering that. That would put the Jugg and the Warpig more upfront, depending on which type of more modern metal styles you are going after. For classic and modern metal the HD could work and for more classic styles the Crawler is glorious.

Those are in the race in my mind, but any more info on styles and tones you like will healp a lot.

Hi Kiichi - thanks for the reply.  These days I'm playing classic rock to classic and modern metal covers, but it could be classic rock/pop/dance stuff too.  So, it helps to have a pickup that can translate to other styles.  I just put a Rebel Yell into my Stripped 58, and that has worked out beautifully in that guitar.  I'd  kinda like to go with the same vibe with more low end.  I thought about the Warpig, but I was afraid it might take out too much of the highs.  I was initially thinking about the A-Bomb.  I really liked the midrange presence on that one.  Yeah the highs are a bit hairy, but that maybe can be EQd out to a certain degree.

Also, I put a three-way toggle in place of the five-way rotary, and it cuts coils via a push/pull tone pot.

Very interesting.  I always like a balanced sounding axe so I always chirp on about the same thing in each and every response.

From what you are saying, a bright guitar should do well with a Crawler set?  Or TIM recommends an Emerald Neck and Holy Diver bridge for versatility?

Personally, I love the Juggerset in a bright guitar because of the great cleans, rhythm, and lead tones.  But, the voice is unrepentently modern which may interfere with the more classic styles.  Definitely very versatile and wonderful set but the styles it will do is likely everything heavier.

My Holydiver/Emerald recommendation would work here too although from what you're saying I think the alnico Nailbombs tick all the boxes. It'd be worth checking out the Crawler humbuckers too - slightly warmer, not quite so powerful and they sit well in PRS for these type of applications.

I would definitely check out Crawlers. As Tim says, they do well in PRS-guitars.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Especially if you like what the RY does for you the HD/EM set that Tim, and myself for that matter, is liking quite a bit would be a great idea I recon (though Tim of course knows this stuff better than any of us by factor 100 minimum =) ). The HD and RY complement each other very well. They both come from a similar place and have a similar goal, but approach it in different ways. A band where one guy plays a HD and one a RY should lock beautifully. The HD will give you more low end, growl, and warmth, opposed to the RY rocking scream, overtones, and punchy low end.

The Crawler also fits into that as the third one. There is a good reason why my four main guitars have the pickups they have. Got one with Crawler bridge MQ neck, one RY set, one with HD / EM, and one with the 10th set. The first three are like brothers. Same blood yet different, and the last one is kind of the father. Bit more layed back, but still same base DNA.

Thanks everyone for their candor!  I'm thinking a Crawler set might just do the trick!  Very cool of Tim to chime in here - much appreciated!

How about the black hawk's. They have a low bottom end to them. I have ceramics in a mahogany body and they chug like crazy.
