PRS Tremonti SE Custom - pickups upgrade
« on: February 20, 2016, 06:21:51 PM »
I want to upgrade the pickups on my PRS SE Tremonti custom.  She feels and plays beautifully but the volumes are variable between strings and the sound is, well 'unsophisticated' if you know what I mean.  I should add that I don't play metal or loud rock, being on clean tones 95% of the time. I'd like to get more mature, plummy sounds like I do with my Les Pauls.  Any BK suggestions?

Mules - in a Vintage LP 'Lemon Drop' V100PGM
Black Dogs - in a Burny Les Paul

Crawlers work really well in PRS guitars and it's a very versatile set. My favourite bridge pickup from BKP and I think it will work well for you. The Abraxas would be another good option.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Slarti hit it on the head as so often, Crawler is where it is at for you. Certainly in the bridge. For the neck an Emerald would pair beautifully.

Make sure to check Slarti´s review of them in the review collection sticky. Extremely well done and informative!
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

The Holydiver neck is also a surprisingly good pairing with a Crawler bridge.

Abraxas-set is versatile. But, I would install Mules myself, if cleans do matter a lot. They are so dynamic, open, 3D-esque when played clean. I play nearly everything with Mules in my blues/classic rock band; from clean to light crunch and thick leadtones a la Bonamassa to Led Zep and even some old hardrock. They handle gain so well, but stay open at the same time. You can steer the amount of ampdrive by your pickingattack. But, I am a little biased as you can read. You will be happy with the Abraxas too, which has a bit more mids, less topend and a bit more output.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I've just had a set of Holydivers put into my SE Tremonti Custom Spalted.

They sound amazing. Beautiful when you drive them but the cleans are lush as well. Crisp and rich. Got the pots and caps changed as well and had a coil tap put in and that really adds a whole other dimension to things. The combination of the tapped neck with the untapped bridge is lovely!

My tastes sound a little more metal than yours but I wanted a versatile set that could sound fairly modern but still retained a lot of 'classic' tone and weren't too barky and aggressive. BKP recommended the HD's or Juggernaut and I'm glad I went HD's
